I went yesterday to take a closer look at neighbors 5510. I really wanted to make sure it was too big for me. Anyway, it started right up and I went to put it in gear and couldn't put it in gear. The guy said that it had been doing it this winter when it got cold at night. It was the sync model and I was planning to go back the next day when he had to feed and heat it up with the salamander. Is this common or has he got water in the transmission some way. Green wasn't glowing quite as bright as I turned her off and walked away.

Mine's only a 4600 but I can go out on a subzero day and if I want shift gears and go and shift gears while I'm going with no problem. Even my old Massey, will shift cold and it's not even sync shift. I would say he has a serious problem.

I'll have to agree with Richard, he has a problem.

My 4700 has not had a problem starting up even when there was ice frozen on the tarp folds. In fact my JD starts MUCH better in the cold than my Chevy diesel truck. The gears have never had a problem getting in gear. Sometimes they are a bit tight and might take a little extra effort or let the tractor move a bit before getting in gear. But I have never been prevented from getting into gear. Does that make sense. The Chevy shifter does the same thing on cold mornings. I move through the gear range as a habit and it is always a bit tighter but loosens up quickly.

When the JD has been tight its always been in the range selector lever and not the gear 1-4 lever.

It sounds like this guy has a problem. I wonder if he changed the fluid/filters per the manual?
