When the temperature dips below the mid 30's, my Jinma 304 will frequently spin the starter but not actually rotate the engine with the turn of the key. I have a 2004 with the non-epa engine. Using the decompression release does not rectify the situation. However, after 3 or 4 engagements of the starter it will typically turn over the motor. Anyone else encounter a similar problem? Any suggestions on the next step I should take? I've had the tractor for more than a year, so if I'm going to do anything to address the problem it will be on my own.

Sounds like the starter drive is not kicking in, sometimes this is due to a bad soleniod , loose connection, check your ground cable.

As per Tommy.

Sounds like not enough amperage getting through. May be even think of increasing wire size. Check battery?

Another thought would the starter shaft has very thick grease on not allowing the gears to engage.

Block heater?

I've addressed this problem numerous times wrt the 200 series, but yours is the first 300 series complaint I've heard. I went through three starters - all passing "bench test" criteria - but all doing the same thing you describe, in weather as warm as 45F. Tearing them down for cleaning and re-lube did no good either.

Tried half a dozen other remedies, all failed until I thought of heat. Got a 200 watt Kat's magnetic heater and stuck it on the starter case. From that point, positive engagement at every turn of the key, down to about 0F anyway. If it's colder than that where you live, consider the bigger Kat's - I think it's a 350w.

I did go ahead and replace the battery yesterday, along with tightening all of the connections. I haven't had a chance to do a cold start to check to see if those steps helped. I suspect I may take the heater route, since this problem never occurs with the engine warm.
