Colorless (?) #2 Diesel Fuel

What is means is that you are going to wear out your pumps, injectors, etc. alot faster. The older style diesel systems were designed to run on higher sulfur fuel. Higher sulfur means more lubricating abilities. Not to despair though. Just get a good supplement like power service with lubricating properties and you will make up for the low sulphur fuels. We have alot of older diesels and everything gets the power service. We haven't had the problems that other people have.

I agree. The current low sulfur stuff has already done most of the damage. I noticed the injectors on my tractor, an Iseki TS1610 from 1980, have begun to leak because I use road diesel. When I take it down this winter, I'll have Viton seals put back in and should be all set. From my standpoint that is cheaper than a new tractor. The fuel won't hurt the mechanical parts that get their lubrication from the oil sump. Powerservice should keep injectors lubed. It looks like I should consider buying some shares of Power Service /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

I use Lucas fuel additive rather than Power service.

An interesting note to CowboyDoc:

Not that you'd do it or that I would either, but I heard from a good Ford source, one that is a family relation and in the engineering department in Dearborn, that off road diesel is bad news for a Powerstroke Engine. It's also bad news for you if Johnny Law dips your tank. My farm name is on my truck door. That makes me a prime target.

 Oh not really, just personal observation and thought on where fuels are heading. The more things change...the more they stay the same. We've already seen what sulfur spec changes did when we went to the current ones way back when. Luckily, there were plenty of innovative companies to provide a solution for older engines, not to mention manufacturers designing for more strigent fuel requirements. I think it would be nice to get it in the fuel at the pump as opposed to adding it separately. I'm running out of shelf space.

Anyway, any good additive should suffice. Never tried Lucas before. I'll see if NAPA has some. I'll check on their ticker symbol too.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

High sulfur in fuel and high acid levels in oil destroy a ton of powerstroke injector o-rings lets see were on the 4th revision i think? Not to mention there ipr o-ring problems.

Most ambulance and goverment agency's use off-road fuel in there vehicles. I think there's a difference in diction when using Off-road (high sulfur) or Offroad (low sulfur w/ red dye).

I didn't even know they make high sulfur fuel anymore? All the local places they get std on-road low sulfur and dye it red they localy knock the dye or at distributor and boom tax free red offroad fuel.

I know there moving toward Ultra-low sulfur and talked about adding water to diesel in a stable form to reduce nox for 07 or 09 to eliminate need for cats. No word yet.

If it is red it is high sulfur offroad/off-road. There is no dye in low sulfur road diesel. Some government agencies, such as the military, are exempt from EPA requirements. We used offroad diesel all the time when I was in the Army in 2000.

I suppose it is possible some refineries are dying low sulfur diesel to sell in place of high sulfur if they can't make high sulfur for some reason. In that case, the dye would indicate a taxation status as well. We have neve done that here that I am aware of. I know at this refinery we sometimes sell low sulfur jet fuel in place of high when we outsell our production or when our kero unit is down for maintenance.

The new tractors are the same esp. the cut's in requiring the low sulfur diesel. According to our local supplier he swears that the two are exactly the same. He said there is absolutely no difference at all between off-road and road diesel besides the dye. He supplies most of this half of the state so I would think he would know.

Hey JUNKMAN, what Agway sells fuel here in NE CT? I never noticed any pumps at the one in Plainfield, but then again, I never looked for one there, either /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Neighbor used to buy it in bulk along with gasoline. Don't know where they buy it from now, because I don't associate with them any longer. Times change...
