Here in Norway it's mostly VW Transporter as DOKA, VW has ca 50% market share on light commercial vehicles, mostly because of 4x4 on all models.
Sprinter almost takes all on the more heavy vans. On pickups it's Hilux and VW Amarok and Nissan Navara on third.

Interesting !! Here in Holland the VW Transporter is most popular at self employed people that spend their money on the 174hp 2.5TDI version with all the luxury that others dont offer, and teh Transporter maybe has a 15% market share. 4wd isnt an issue here, because the country is flat and it hardly snows. In the heavier segment, the Sprinter has serious competition from the Daily. Pickup trucks hardly get sold here.

The Toyota Hiace was the hardest competition for VW but the emissions demand killed it and it was a horrible outdated van.
99.9% of the Hiaces was 4x4.

But non of the European vans could match the ruggedness of the Hilux and Hiace. The went on for 3 - 400000km of brutal use with almost no problems. Many of the vans have quite weak transmissions and the suspension is not real heavy duty for use on real bad roads.

You are paying premium for diesel engines in the US, here the difference is small, but often petrol engines are not available at all on commercial vehicles.

I read: "As some of you may know the Jeep Wrangler will finally get a diesel in 2016. The problem I have is they will be using the same 3.0L V6 currently used in the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500. Rated at 240HP and 420 lb-ft of torque and could get up to 28 MPG on the HWY. Why would they need such a big engine in the first place? couldn't they of used a fiat sources 2 liter ish 4 cyl with around 150HP and 280 lb-ft and boost fuel economy in the mid 30's mpg range?"

Uhhhmmmm.... how long they think that 2 liter Fiat diesel will last in a 2.5 ton Wrangler ? This engine is made to run 350.000km in a streamlined 1200-1400kg vehicle that does 55mpg... And engine manufacturers express an engine service lifespan in how many liters of fuel it will burn.

Next to that, to boost the fuel economy from 28mpg to 35mpg one has to make significant changes in the vehicle itself. Reducing weight, aerodynamics, rolling resistance or whatsoever. The difference in friction loss of reciprocating these two extra cylinders is not going to give a 25% improvement in fuel economy, not in a billion years... In fact the smaller engined vehicle is often geared lower, reducing the advantage of less internal friction because of fewer parts, by increasing the amount of friction loss by increasing their speed...

I haven't been keeping up but has this been officially announced? If I can get this with a 6 speed, I'll be selling my current wrangler and buying a new diesel. This engine is getting high 20's to low 30's in the grand Cherokee so with a manual it should be great in the wrangler. I hope it's true.

I have a Duramax..... I like diesels. But with the cost per gallon of diesel at $1.50 more per gallon than gas, I've bought my last diesel.

That's interesting because here (oz) petrol (gas) and diesel are about the same. How much is diesel over there? It is about $6.82/gal here.

Gas around my place is $1.74 per gallon and diesel is $3.39. To big of a difference.
