You're right that it will compact the 6", but he has 6-8" of loose clay dirt underneath that sand. I've used plate compactors at work for nearly 30 years and can tell you that he won't get the dirt compacted under the sand unless he does it first. The most penatration you can get with a plate compactor is about 6-8".

I only caught it because I have been following his barn build. He dug up a cute little snake when he put in the dirt. If you haven't read his thread on the barn, do a search and check it out... he's doing a great job!
