^ good story, Alan. Sounds like a nice place.
I went to Shanghai for a work trip in 2013. I was pretty excited to go! But that sentiment quickly soured. All of the "high end" restaurants our local colleagues took us to were kinda dingy and mysterious. I have a shellfish allergy and no one could ever tell me if there was seafood in a given dish. All the meat had bones in it, none were ever removed. So everyone is sitting there putting their fingers in their mouth to pull out bones, or spitting them back into their plates. And then using their hands to grab more of the shared food.
While I was there, there was a swine flu outbreak and all the local farmers killed and dumped all their pigs into the local rivers. Like, many thousands of pigs just dumped into all the rivers to rot. You couldn't even think about drinking tap water, got old trying to get enough plastic bottles of water all the time. The air was a thick grey smog, so despite a 12th floor hotel room, there was almost no view.
Great history, very friendly people and interesting culture, but I won't ever go back.
