Computer boot up time?

/ Computer boot up time? #21
44.16 secs on the last startup. PC I built the 1st of January. Probably could "shave" off quite a bit if I didn't have the ASUS monitoring utility, but I'll keep it.

One I just built, should push over 4.5 - over 5 GHz in overclock

ASUS P8Z68 V-Pro /GEN3 Motherboard
i5 2500k 3.30 GHz overclockable processor
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 plus cooling the CPU
Crucial 120gb SSD drive (OS and utilities drive)
Hitachi Deskstar 1 TB HHD for games photos and lesser programs
XFX Radeon HD-6970 2gb GPU
Corsair PRO Series Gold AX850 watt PSU
G.Skills Ripjaws 8gb RAM
Windows 7 64bit OEM (Home)
Corsair Graphite 600T case. This is the neatest case I have ever seen. Right now I'm running 2- 200mm fans 3- 120mm fans + cpu, psu, gpu fans

I use an Identical HHD for my external drive for backups and it runs FAST on my USB 3.0 ports ( case is an infosafe HHD case eSata and USB 3.0 to pc)

What I cannot figure out is just why there are times when one of my laptops such as the one that usually takes less than 3 minutes to boot up (Toshiba L-305) can take 6:28 this morning when nothing has changed during the past 24 hours.

Updates running in the background? Possibly automatic update is on, and some updates need a reboot; they are running when you start the computer?

Good point Robert, I have all my updates set for manual install, the program like Windows can check for updates, but I have to confirm it, also I disable most of any add-on auto updates, like Adobe. The only one I let run is my BitDefender AV.

Some updates cause more trouble than they're worth till the beta has been around a while.

That may explain the reason, thanks for the tip.

You turn off computers?

Really?

:D

The only time I turn off computers is when we will be on vacation. Laptops get put to sleep or hibernated but not turned off.

Most of the reboots are because of security updates which can affect start up times.

Later,
Dan

I use the "sleep" mode and disable hibernate since hibernate will consume some HHD space by saving RAM info to the HHD, since I have a SSD (Solid state drive) as my main drive, I don't want a bunch of re-writes.

I shut mine down at the end of the day, Sometimes when programs close, they don't close down properly, or 100% and use resources. You also have memory leaks that use up resources. Reboot will clear out those resources and give you a fresh start.

But that is for me and my desktop, We have a few work PC's that are hardly ever off unless rebooted to "clear 'em out" or the power goes out, so everything is backed up at the end of the day.

I have a pair of 3 year old Toshiba laptops, both running Vista 32 bit,

There are many variables that determine how long it takes to boot. One thing I can tell you for sure (based on my experience) is that Windows 7 will boot MUCH faster than Vista. So if your laptops are Windows 7 compatible consider an upgrade.

Really ?
Do you believe that NOTHING you do on your confuser in the course of using it affects the way it shuts down and the way it starts up the next time ?

This goes back to the old support engineer joke;
Programmer: It worked fine yesterday, I haven't changed anything and now it doesn't work.
Support Engineer: OK, I can probably help you.
Just show me where you haven't changed it.
