I tried Mozilla but not Firefox yet. I haven't used Mozilla enough to know how it compares in terms of security, but there are quite a few websites that don't look right on it, so I went back to IE.

IE should be fine if you have a firewall and run spyware scans such as adaware every now and then. I'm just running the XP Pro firewall that came with SP2, that is, it blocks in both directions. My wife's laptop has Windows 2000 and Sygate free firewall and since I loaded that she has had no problems with spyware.

I have had some severe problems with spyware on my computers, work computers, and my mother's computer. All the problems so far (once the spyware was eliminated which was very difficult on two occasions) have been solved by the firewalls.

I am certainly no expert on the subject however, just sharing my experience.

Thanks Alan, I have the SP2 firewall too, and I run several anti-spyware programs, including Microsoft's own. I think of this more as a virus..........there's supposed to be a new version of Spybot out, I'm going to go download it and see what's new.
There are also supposed to be "fixes", but from what I read, this one is new and improved, and the fixes (like what Whiskey posted) work, but it just re-installs itself again, unless you go in and change the registry in a very specific area - which I'm not eager to do. I'm off on Thursday, so I guess I'll spend the day trying to fix this then.

I also tried to do a system restore, but from what I've learned, the search engine installed itself on July 1, and something won't let me do a sys restore before that date....

As I said before...... spend the $35 and the day on the phone and let the people at Microsoft help you resolve the problem. In the end, it will be the easiest way and the $35 will be painless by comparison. I speak from experience. One time fee for one problem no matter how long it takes to resolve. Can't beat a deal like that..
