Would these flash drives work independent of my computer? What I mean is my computer can only accept up to two gig of ram and I can buy two 1 gig modules for around $50 and sell off my two 512's on ebay or some site like that. But if I found a good deal on a flash drive would it still work if my system is maxed out already?

Short Answer: Yes
Longer Answer: Absolutely Yes

From Vista Help:

"The recommended amount of memory to use for Windows ReadyBoost acceleration is one to three times the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed in your computer. For instance, if your computer has 512 megabytes (MB) of RAM and you plug in a 4 gigabyte (GB) USB flash drive, setting aside from 512 MB to 1.5 GB of that drive will offer the best performance boost. The minimum size for any USB flash drive to work with Windows ReadyBoost is 256 MB."

If you buy the new RAM to max your system out at 2g (same as mine) you can then use a USB storage device from 2g to 6g for optimum performance. This is in additional to your 2g of RAM.

For example, iif you upgrade your RAM to 2G and you purchase an 8G USB storage device that supports Readyboost you can allocate from 2G to 6G of that space for Vista to use as additional memory. This allocation is determined when you plug the device into your USB port. A window pops up asking if you want to use the device for Readyboost. If you say Yes, then gives you an option of how much of the device's storage you want to make available. You can pick anywhere from 2G to 6G for optimum performance. The remainder of the storage is available for other uses.

Hope this helps clarify it for you.

Thanks Licklog, that answered my question perfectly.

Yes.

2G of memory made a world of difference for me, with Vista. I tend to open two or three applications at the same time and a number of tabs in explorer. After awhile the system would slow to a crawl with one 512M module.

First I had one 512, then I added a second 512. That did not work well. A bit faster but it had a bug from time to time at shut down. Never did get rid of the bug with the two different memory cards even if it did pass every memory test.

Then I replaced the two 512's with two new 1Gs. The system is stable and much faster now. I will have at least 2G or more in all new computer in the future.

I found a memory store that ships from the south San Francisco bay area with good prices that will also take back your old memory, sell it on a used memory market and then send you back some money. I never did send back the two used 512's.

Also remember the SD HC(high capacity) card come in higher speeds for the 400 MP :D digital cameras. There is class 2, 4, 6. The 6 is 6 MB/s transfer rate. My boss has a big digital SLR with a 32gig SDHC, takes pics as fast as you want.

It will cost me around $53 for 2 - 1 gig modules.

What would be a good way to sell my 512 modules? Ebay?

Most people don't want to buy unless they can see them work in a system, or on a memory checker. If you have a computer show in town near you, take them and have them check them and offer to sell them to the memory vendor. They swap and sell all the time.
