has anyone used a 55 gallon drum? cut down of course
Do a search on TBN for ballast box and you will find mamy 55 gallon drum designs, basically anything that will hold cement, draw bar and top link bar will make an ok ballast box. The design is pretty much up to your imagination. Most are going for function more than anything. Thats why when we see someone who has taken the time to make one that's as nice looking as this one. it gets noticed

Loved the ballast box. :) My new winter project something that I can actually build because it involves wood and concrete instead of steel and welding. Thanks for the great idea -Ed

Good job, I'm just wondering, is it more appropriate to use cement like you did than having a box that you can fill with sand or stones so you can vary the weight depending on conditions?

I do have different weights available but I can't think of any reason for using a lesser weight.

The ballast block is for heavy FEL work or wheel packing duties. I don't know what light FEL work would be.

I can attach the box blade if I would want less ballast but if I am lifting with the bucket I want the back end planted hard.

With a carring box like you suggested you have load and unload the stones. That sounds like work to me. :)

Now if you get it coated with truck bed liner, the type that stays rubbery it will have a cool custom look and not be prone to chipping.

It is 1,300 pounds. The back portion is 48" wide x 24" tall x 12" deep.

You should put a wing on it. Think of the downforce you'd pick up on the straightaway :D

Pretty cool! How about some reflectors on it and some art work. Nice job.
