To most degree for me anyway if I'm putting time and effort into something I want to do it right within reason. For me anyway on diy building projects it usually takes longer with greater effort to try and make something look right than actually do it correctly, plus than it continuously will not bother me so I can sleep. tearing something completely apart and starting from scratch literally in my case. This was especially prevalent with a bathroom remodel on my previous 60 yr old house to put it lightly I wanted to install a bathroom fan on a Saturday many Saturdays later it was complete after rewwiring everything, running new circuits from the panel , installing new sewer amd water ines, new vanity, subfloor, tiled floor and bath, toilet, drywall, and hired someone to refinish my cast iron tub, lol.
Got to watch that Mission Creep on diy stuff. Wife and I were thinking about redoing the counter tops (house came with butt ugly pink laminate tops), with fairly affordable butcher block tops. Well, we figure prices, and yep, doable. But, that really would be the ideal time to replace the old cabinets. And, if you're replacing the cabinets, might as well redo the floor at the same time.

It's entirely possible I have some undiagnosed ADHD, and that can affect things. Daughter gives me crap, cause one time I was cleaning out the work car, and ended up installing a window unit AC in my shed. I think it started as cleaning car, then some trash end up on the ground, so I got a trash can and started picking on little stuff around the yard, and saw the old window unit sitting on the porch "better put that in the shed", and next thing you know, cars still a mess, and I'm cutting a whole in the wall to put an AC in...

I sympathize. But is that ADHD or Procrastination? You were putting off the initial task of cleaning out the car by focusing on everything but that task.

Sometimes I start off to do something and 40 other tasks later the orignal is still not done.

And mission creep is compounded by regulation creep.
A county near me now requires WIRED smoke detectors both inside and outside ALL bedrooms and kitchens if any modification is done to the house that requires a permit.
Replacing a post on an existing deck requires a permit (link to reddit discussion).
So that will require upgrading existing battery smoke detectors just because of a deck post replacement.

Some local bureaucrat's BIL must be in the fire alarm installation business. I know that is cynical but what else explains it?

Been that way here for quite sometime... at least in my SF Bay Area City...

A permit is required to pull and reset a toilet...

Awe inspectors, saved my legit cabin project once especially. Before hanging drywall had wiring and boxes etc inspected. The inspector pointed out before drywall was hung i needed to hardwire and interconnect all smoke detectors before I was just going to buy a sufficient #of battery standalone ones lol. Much easier to run a continuous circuit and install boxes with no drywall up. It was also relatively inexpensive to do it right and to code.

More than not smoke detectors are found not working when reviewed at time of a fire call.

One on every level and in each sleeping room is minimum and often all disabled...

This is why 10 year sealed battery units are only option for battery.

I would always find batteries missing on my annual inspections and now common for the entire detector to be missing.

With hardwire not so much...

The old 1/10/100 thing; they caught it at the '10' point. As much as people don't like inspectors, they are there to prevent it getting to the '100' point.

It's easy to disable a hard wired ones also. All mine are just three flat with a retaining clip. Admittedly Ive disabled them when the backup battery needs replacement the occasional beep is annoying but i understand importance and Im unable or to lazy at the time to drive 15 miles to the closest town for a replacement.
