I've been looking for something larger for spreading fertilizer on my yard. Tractor Supply has these cone style spreaders. Fertilizer Spreader - 2118427 | Tractor Supply Company Have any of you used these or other brands? How do you like them? I live in an area where it seems the wind blows everyday, how does the wind affect the spread pattern?

I've used baltimatic and herd spreaders. They work pretty good but I wouldnt put out ryegrass seed if its very windy

I have a similar spin spreader, TurboSpin 450 works well enough I use it for larger lawns and to put out Ironite.

I also have considered something like the ATV spreader shown on the right side of the TSC page. Reason being for things like seasonal fertilizing and amendments I could use the lawn mower instead of running a heaviy tractor across the lawns. Supposedly I could use the cat 1 spin spreader that you are inquiring about behind my x749, I am going to try that out too.

How big is you’re yard? Are you sure you need a 3pt

Ed, that is what we have at the farm, maybe not same brand. I spread 10 acres in about 5 hours, this past Sunday. It holds comfortably the 7 1/2 50 lb bags of nitrogen I just spread on one field. I know it says 500 lbs but I would think that 10 bags would have some spilling out the top when I hit the bumps in the beginning, but you may not have that problem in a flat yard. As far as wind I was spreading stuff the size of b-bs, at my recommended speed and setting in the post irene gusts (18 mph) and didn't notice any discernible drift. Ours sits pretty low to the ground.

Now my 2 cents on seed, I use the county Ag no till drill, the amount we would spend on spreading spun seed is astronomical in comparison to $20/ day and $4 an acre to rent it from them. We use less seed that way. Not saying you shouldn't do it, just want to give you another option. Watch videos on it, I am ok with a little roughness on my fields , you may not be ok with it on your lawn. Good luck!

Those types of spreaders can throw seed/fertilize as far as 25ft depending on size of the seed/pellets, and how high you have the spreader raised with the 3pt lift. I hope you have a BIG yard lol. Wind shouldn't have too much effect on the pattern, unless you're talking some really STRONG wind. Since the material comes off the bottom of the spreader, it's pretty close to the ground. It's not spraying it up into the air, but mostly it just "flies" parallel to the ground.

If you get one, be sure to clean it out thoroughly after each use. The absolute worst thing you can do is run fertilizer through a spreader and then put it up for a year. It will probably be froze up by the next spring! At my hunt club, we usually rinse it out good, and then rub it down with some used oil or diesel.

If you promise to bring it back to Minnesota by the time I need it, maybe we can work something out:laughing:

For what its worth, after my FIL passed away, I decided to use his baltimatic spreader and put out ryegrass seed on alicia bermuda pasture to get some winter grass going. Just guessed it was 4-5 acres so bought four sacks of seed. When I started out, no matter how slow I went (low 1 and low throttle) the spreader slung seed out the top all over me. Couldnt figure it out. So, I put out four sacks in about two passes. A TBN member helped solve problem. Spreader has about a foot long agitator in it that I assume is good for breaking up the fertilizer but not for putting out such a light seed. But it didnt really matter since we have not had rain since the turn of the century i think

+10 on that. Seed won't hurt it a bit but any 'N' will eat it up faster than a 5 year old with a chocolate ice cream cone.

Mine has a plastic cone but I still rinse it and spray it with WD 40 because the mechanical parts are still metal.

Use ut and don't clean it, put it away and the following year it will look like swiss cheese.

And the used oil will last longer.

Mine looks identical to the one shown in the TSC link, but I paid $300 for it last year. TSC does not necessarily have the best price. ;) Most tractor dealers and even some feed and farm supply stores carry them. (under numerous brand names) Shop around for a better deal.

They will work well for what you want. As already mentioned, very light seeds will sometimes come out of the top, but that's to be expected. Just don't fill it up, and it shouldn't be as much of a problem.
