I noticed on the swindow sticker of my new 11 slverado z71, it said I have 3.42 gears. Is there a way to confirm this through the vin number or other way?

Not that I know of, unless you can get to the GM vin decoder...So far, I've found the stickers to be accurate...You could always do it old school by jacking it up and counting the revoulutions of the driveshaft to one full wheel turn..Get you in the ballpark anyway.

That does not work with GM trucks with a G80 locker. I have tried and it does not work.

If you bought that truck new the window sticker should be good enough proof. There is no code I know of in the Vin# that tells rear end. It tells other things like plant, engine, tranny, ect.

On Fords the door sticker has a axle code. I also find it on most rear ends on a data plate on the axle itself.

If you use this method, jack up one side, leaving the other on the ground, unless you have a locking rear differential

One turn of the passenger side, is one turn...Main drive wheel, like forever...Unless something has changed.

The glovebox code is another good idea.

When I tried this on my 3.73 geared G80 equipped 2005 Dmax I had it took 5.5 turns to get one revolution of the drive shaft. I confirmed this with both sides. I then tried turning the drive shaft and 3.7 turns rotated the wheels one revolution.

I agree, it should work but just did not on my G80 equipped truck. I have done this 100's of times on open and limited slip diffs and it worked fine, just not for me on the G80. Not sure why?

I've always confirmd by looking at the tag on the diff. Do the new trucks still have those? My '01 does, but that is almost ten years old now. FWIW, my tag on the diff matches the code on the tag in my glovebox, and the original window stick of options.
