I noticed on the swindow sticker of my new 11 slverado z71, it said I have 3.42 gears. Is there a way to confirm this through the vin number or other way?
Not that I know of, unless you can get to the GM vin decoder...So far, I've found the stickers to be accurate...You could always do it old school by jacking it up and counting the revoulutions of the driveshaft to one full wheel turn..Get you in the ballpark anyway.

That does not work with GM trucks with a G80 locker. I have tried and it does not work.
If you bought that truck new the window sticker should be good enough proof. There is no code I know of in the Vin# that tells rear end. It tells other things like plant, engine, tranny, ect.
On Fords the door sticker has a axle code. I also find it on most rear ends on a data plate on the axle itself.

One turn of the passenger side, is one turn...Main drive wheel, like forever...Unless something has changed.
The glovebox code is another good idea.
Join the gm truck forum and post a request for a build sheet for your VIN or lookup all the RPO codes to see what you have.

This is the simplest thing to do. That tag has all the RPO codes for how the truck was built. GU6 is what you're looking for.
You got 5.5 turns because you were turning the spider gears. The drive shaft method is the only way to do it.
