Mahindra 2615 gear
My 2615 manual has a conflict on what kind of fluid goes in the front axle. On one page, a general lube specs page, it shows to use hydraulic/transmission fluid. On the page where it shows the specific front axle service procedure it says to use 85W140 gear oil. Which is correct?

My 2615 manual shows only gear oil, not hydraulic fluid in the front axel.

426DMB, I have the Cub Cadet version of your tractor (7234, 23HP 4WD, Manual shift, about 9 years old). I realize Mahindra may have changed the specs but I would guess it is still the same front end that is on the CC. My manual shows the same thing for the transmission and front differential. It calls for Cub Cadet Hydraulic Transmission Fluid "or" 85-140 Gear Lube. It says that in 2 or 3 places. I have done my recommened changes and I have always used the Hydraulic Transmission fluid. It has not been the Cub brand, just a quality fluid. My last change I used Case HyTran which is what the closest Cub dealer stocked but he sells a lot of other equipment and that is what was recommeneded. If you don't have a Mahindra Dealer close probably any quality HyTran type fluid would work. Kubota makes some good stuff along with NAPA and any other major manufacturer. My two cents.

Two items here:

First of all, in something like a front axle which does not involve pumping the fluid through small orifices, lots of pressure, etc. I think the main concern is just keeping the parts covered with lube. The heavy gear oil will work just fine, IMHO. I wouldn't put it in the hydraulic system, but in an axle, all it has to do is cling and flow. Any heavy gear oil will work.

Secondly, my CC dealer has a rather low opinion of the Cadets that they currently carry in the CUT size. The like the mowers just fine, but not the tractors. They also have a less than stellar of the past several years of CUT Cadets. What model/year of the Cadet CCs were basically Mitsu's and how different were they from the Mahindra 15 series we see now. Are they pretty good tractors or should I not even look?
I'm asking because CC went to bat for me with Kohler a while back over an engine issue and got me a new engine when the dealer couldn't and Kohler wouldn't. This was in an old Cadet 109 lawn/garden tractor.

I have a 3015 HST and have come upon the same issue. I don't know for sure but I would think if the MFD is like a differential in a car you would want to run the gear oil. I am also wondering if the rear end has the same situation. Maybe one of the dealers can answer this.

Most of the 15 series tractors come thru with hydro oil in the front axel.
When we do a service on a tractor we drain the front axel and put gear oil in it.
It does say in the manual to run gear oil in the front axel. Do not mis the oils if you run gear oil you need to drain the axel.

DO NOT PUT AXEL OIL IN THE REAR END!

You trans/ rear end is the resivor for the hydraulic system and you should only ever run hydraulic/trans fluid in it.

Thank you for the information Wallace. That makes sense to me.

Thats also what we do for customers at their 50 hr. fluid changes.
We drain the hyd. oil, and replace with gear oil in the front axle.
It old oil burns real good in a waste oil heater !! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The official word from Mahindra is to use hy-trans in the front axle. That was clarified last week at the Mahindra Service school that we hosted here at our place. I really doubt it would hurt anything to run gear oil, it's slippery and of course it won't be as prone to leaking in an older tractor, but hy-trans is the proper ticket per Mahindra.
