My JD manual says 5w-30 is good for all temperature regions. Switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 at 13 hours.

Using the lower numbered oil is no problem because it'll ALWAYS be more viscous, even a 0w-30, at startup than at operating temperature. You'll get more protection with the lower-first-number oil at startup where most of the wear occurs because the oil pump will pick it up quicker and get it around to all the bearings.

If a diesel engine has been run on a non-diesel oil, there is a danger in switching to the correct grade. Diesel lubricant is a detergent oil and you may find that bearings, valve stems, rings etc. lose fit and tolerance. The diesel lubricant will flush out the carbon deposits that may have been keeping your engine tight.

I'm facing the same dilemna with both a tractor and a diesel truck. From the condition and colour of the oil in them, I suspect that previous owners have used non-diesel lubricant.

Good luck,

Auldyin.

Well, After much research I went with Mobil Delvac 1300 oil and TSC's Traveller Trans/Draulic Premium oil that said it was rated as a compatible oil with NH134a,b,c,d. Which is what the manual states I should use.
I am hoping that the oil New Holland uses in it's new tractors is of the diesel type. The manual simply states 10W-30. I could not find diesel 10W-30 oil in my area so naturally I began to wonder if they used regular motor oil.
I wonder if they would care to expand on their manuals and become even more vague.
I now know that there is a diesel 10W-30 oil but it is much to hard to find here, I don't know why. Hence, the Mobil Delvac 1300.

As I wrote in a different thread, you can find 10w-30 diesel oil. It isn't common, but it can be found. Much of the time it is as an 'off brand' and many people are reluctant to use them. I found 10w-30 CI-4 under the brand name Champion.

Of course, you can always get it from the dealer, too. In either case, it is bottled by someone else so the Kubota oil is really an 'off brand', too.
