The rocks are not at our the lake lot. They are at a lakeside cottage for which I made some stone steps a few years ago.
The avatar; back when, in the area I grew up, putting up hay in this fashion was quite normal. A team of horses on each side of the skid that was used to pick up hay in the field and bring it to the stack. Some just used poplar poles laid on the hay that were moved back as the stack got bigger. At times several smaller tractors were used instead of horses. Others used a sweep that was pulled to the top of the skid and then dumped. It involved a lot less work than the small square bales everyone seemed to go to in the 50's. Hay kept better too than the squares if they weren't stacked and tarped right away.
Then there was the farmhand used for making stacks and the stack mover to transport the stack to the feed lot. This might still be the cheapest way to put up hay if the climate is not to wet and the stacks do not have to be moved far.

Still remember your posts of your little 'bota sitting triumphantly in a field with the vanquished rocks off to the edges.
And you rototilled it, too! Until then, I would have never dreamed of turning a tiller loose in a field with all those rocks - and having it come out in one piece!
