I guess I'm not a complete newbie to tractors- I worked in the potato industry a couple of decades ago and put several thousand hours on a few tractors in the 90-150hp range back then, but I feel like a complete newbie in the tractor buying world. Comparing various makes of seemingly very similar machines, trying to sort out what will do everything I might need or, alternatively, what tasks I'm prepared to not be able to do. I'm still wrestling with whether to go for a bigger, used, machine and take the risk of buying someone's problems or to go for a smaller, new machine and potentially be frustrated with the limitations of a compact machine. It will probably be about 3 months before I make the purchase so I expect I'll be making many changes of mind in that time.
Are the smaller JD tractors made to a different standard / quality than their large machines?

That's OK Pete, take your time.

I can't speak to the standard of quality of 'smaller' JDs as my 4105 & D110 are the only tractors I've ever had. They've both done me right and not one leak/break-down in the 3 years I've had'em.

All that I can advise is to assess what implements you want your tractor to utilise, what other tasks you may want it to do and, perhaps, re-read my first post of this thread. A good Dealership will sell you the tractor you need.

And seeing as you're taking a deep breath... by all means check out the other colour tractors again. Talk to your neighbours as to who (dealership) has the best reputation in & around Gippsland. Heck, bring a neighbour along with you when you go to look (there's some great pubs in the area if I remember right).

Pop over to Tassie for our field days (AGFEST, 5-7 May) for a nice vacation and another look at a tractor Colours muster.

What did you end up doing mate ?

I know it is too late, but I would have kept the old machine too, I would like a tractor to attach to every implement I use :)

Ok, but that was not what I had in mind when I said I would have kept the old machine....lol
