Consignment auction policy???

You never know what something will bring at auction. I've seen neat stuff get hardly any bids and then I've seen a couple of guys with hard heads and a pocket full of money go head to head and buy stuff for way over what it's worth. The last pi$$ing contest I saw like that was on one of about 5 - 5' root rakes. One guy started bidding and another guy came over and bid the first one up to $1300. After the first guy bought it the auctioneer asked the second guy if he wanted one for the same price. The second guy laughed in the first guys face and walked off. The rest of the rakes went for $800. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree with the others. Make up an add, include pictures if you can. Get the adds out to anybody who might be interested and in places where people will see it.
I just advertised my 15 year old tractor/loader/backhoe for sale merely to test the waters. Darn if it didn't sell right out from under me in 2 days. For 2 grand more then I paid for it 2 years ago. I figure that I got back my original purchase price, all the $ I paid in loan interest plus the $ I spent on the repairs and improvments I made to it. So as it stands now. I got to own and enjoy it for 2 years for no real cost.
So Definatly, try selling it privately before you do anything.

Thanks for all the replies! I guess I just think I have a pretty nice set-up with low hours and the remainder of the factory warranty and thought maybe someone would jump on it and decide that they just had to have it. I guess since I'm not in a big rush, I might just advertise it like you suggest. You guys have me thinking anyways. Like I said, I don't have any auction experience to speak of.

My Deere dealer will take things on his lot on consignment. I have sold two things - skidsteer and old JD 420 2-cyl for $1500 to $2000 more than what I thought I could get by advertising. They were both in real good shape and clean. The dealer said I was setting the price too low, and that he would take 15% of the selling price. Took the skidsteer a few months to sell, but the 2-cyl JD sold in a couple weeks.
He also has the auction, but I didn't try that route.

Last month I moved from my 6 acres to an apartment (yea, BIG MOVE!). Had to sell my L2500. First week or two in paper, some response and a looker or two. Tractor had 110 hours on it. Never sat outside. Looked new. Trouble I had was a new one was about $800 more that what I thought it was worth. Of course if you add the tax that someone might have to pay, then the gap gets wider. Anyway, It was the tractor, 5 ft bush hog, carryall, and disk. I called the dealer and asked about a consignment. They wanted to price it at LOAN Value and then take 10% of that. I told them thanks but I knew I could give it away to someone without hauling it down for them to give away and then take $$$$ for doing it. On the third week I had some more lookers and on Sunday night a guy came by and wanted it real bad. I was moving the next day and decided to take his offer and run. He just wanted the tractor and mower. He offered about $500 less than I wanted but I still had some things I could sell to make up the difference. The ad ran for another week because I couldn't stop it in time. I had guys coming out of the woodwork and expressing regret that they didn't call sooner. They said they would have snapped it up. Long story short, if you have the time, sell it yourself and keep the 10%. Plus, you're probably a better saleman that the dealer. When you look lovingly at your tractor and explain the only reason you are parting with it is that your moving, and you explain with tenderness how you cared for it, it should sell.

I am an auction junkie. I tried to buy a JD compact at auction for over a year then finally gave up and bought a new one.

There is an auction yard ten minutes from my home and he has several auctions a year. The JD compacts sell very well, especially if people know where it came from. The JD dealers bring their trades there to sell because they can get more money and don't need to worry about fixing anything.

If it is only going to cost $35 that is a bargain.
