A useful cookie setting is to "allow first party cookies" and " block third party cookies". This will allow cookies for the web sites you want to view, but block the cookies from advertisers.

For WinXP, Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Advanced/Overide Automatic Cookie Handling/+Accept first party, +block third party, +allow session cookies/OK
