He sharpens both sides of the blades so you have a fresh sharp cutting edge when you change directions. Trees and brush dull the blades faster so if your cutting both, you dull the one side of the blade on the harsh stuff and still have plenty of sharp blade left for the grass and you can switch back and forth depending on you mowing situation.

thanks, figured I was missing something, good idea if the cutter is hydraulic driven, lasts twice as long between sharpening
