Continuing Kubota saga

Beginning to wonder if my salesman (new) is a former car sales guy as he definitely has the "selling" thing down although his knowledge of the Kubota product line is poor (I know more from doing my little research - and visiting TBN!). Maybe this corporate thing happens w/ cars and he thought he'd try it w/ Kubota?

I mentioned earlier that my heart went pitter-pad when I looked this unit over again yesterday  Uh-oh.

One last thought - Any chance some of these current on the lot machines get the price dropped due to the Tier4 thing kicking in 2012? I'm pretty sure this one is a Tier3 emissions rig. Just wondering how they phase in a Tier.

It sounds like a car thing as I have gotten lower prices a couple of times when the salesman called to see if there were any incentives going on. My son sold cars for a short time and my son in law sold cars for a lot of years.

Just the opposite may be happening as many don't want the Tier4 engines, I sure wouldn't.

Wasn't in the tractor business before retiring but in something similar with lower volume and higher price. It wasn't unusual for a dealer to ask the company for what we called a SPAR, a Special Pricing Action Request. Dealer is close to a deal on a machine sitting on the dealer's lot. Dealer gets special financing terms from the company to carry the inventory but the machine might be sitting there and its getting close to the end of the season. Got a customer interested in buying, and just a little more incentive might make the deal. It is to both the dealer's and company's benefit to move the machine so why not ask the company if they will chip in to make the deal? In our business happened all the time. Sometimes the company ran the numbers and said yes, sometimes the answer was no. High volume buyer seldom heard no but in tough times and near the end of the season (having to look at carrying a machine over the winter) the company would usually chip in to close the deal on any serious offer.

I don't think the emissions thing has anything to do with trying to push last year's models. They have just been sitting on the lot and need to move them.

A while back I called a dealer to get a price on a M5040. When the salesman called back with my quote, which was comparable to other quotes I had gotten on the same setup, he said he had a M7040 in last year's model with 0 hrs he could set up the same way for $500 less. He was just trying to move inventory he had on the lot for a while I think.

Stupid me, I should have ran over there and bought that thing.:confused2:

Get another dealer to quote and compare.

Don't keep hassling them. If it's a good deal (determined through multiple quotes) go for it. If not leave it be.

Based on my experience... tractor salesman are not like car salesman. I let you all figure out what that means.

My recent buying experience was I was looking at a Grand L 5740 that they had on the lot for awhile 2 plus yrs to be exact. i talked to the store manager about it he told me his price 25k bottom line, I said I think 20k is where I want to be. He wrote it up then contacted kubota and the deal was done,He told me they helped him sell it below invoice price. I didnt ask how they helped. I then dickered a cash price for a la854 loader that I installed myself.
So all Said I got a Grand L5740 with loader for less than the original tractor price. All because He contacted corporate to help him move inventory that been sitting.

Well - I made my decision and I'm going with the 8540HDC (cab) w/ 12 speed, loader + 7' bucket, QA pallet forks, 3rd function valve, 2 sets of rear remotes - delivered (I'm 45 miles away). Final was 46,500 and I'm pretty happy with that one - not below my 45,000 but originally I wasn't even looking at cabs because they were too spendy. Ohhhh Boyyyy!

PS - thanks again to all of you for your kind help and input. You gave me a lot of perspectives to consider.

I know I don't as well. Interestingly, as bad as the economy is, used heavy duty trucks (tractor-trailer type) are selling like hotcackes used. Same scenario, no one wants the new emissions compliant engines.

Emission compliant means leaner burn. more heat and less reliability, actually not leaner in combustion chamber burn but after combustion burn with additional additives like DEF or injecting diesel in the exhaust stream and igniting it via a sparkplug or both. It all adds up to more complexity, more parts to breakdown and more fuel (or expensive additives) used.

Tractor dealers are just like truck dealers, every unit is floorplanned and the dealer pays taxes on equipment on the lot. As a franchisee, the dealer is always at a price point set by the manufacturer (on new equipment). Used equipment is based on what the market will bear.

Any tractor is considered used if it's sold and used, even if for 5 minutes and your tractor may have been at a customers as a demo, a common practice here. I took my 105 on a demo from the dealer and bought it. However, I could have said no even though I used it. The dealer has to sell it as a used unit, because it was/is.

Finally, Kubota isn't in the business of accessorizing any tractor, the dealer is.
