Contractor disappeared

   / Contractor disappeared #27
My foundation contractor disappeared for a couple weeks. He finally return my calls and now he wants more $$$ to continue the work.  He gave me a written bid for the foundation work and I agreed to the bid without any negotiation on the price. So far, he had spent 1 day on the job. He said it turns out to be a lot more work than he originally thought. The concrete cost more (his cost at $141 per year and concrete truck idling time at $3 per minute because of my location...) and he forgot to include the sand in the original bid???? It will need about 10 yard of sand at $40 per yard.
He's willing to remove the forms that he already did, walk away and I owe him nothing or ... agree to pay him all these extra charges if I want him to continue. What he said may be true and I don't mind pay him the extra but I'm a little concern about his action? Why didn't he just tell me right away instead of disappeared and avoided my calls for 2 weeks. I have to chase him down to find out why he didn't continue the work.... What do you think? Fire him or pay the extras?

I'd shoo the jackass away and tell everyone you know who is planning on having any concrete work done to steer clear of him. It's jerks like this who give the rest a bad name. "I forgot", I didn't know, ya gotta be kidding me. They are supposed to know what they are doing. It's not Ted Macs amature hour.
Find someone who knows what they are doing and can work in a professional manner. I don't know where you are but I know a really good concrete guy in Yuba City. He just did some work for me last summer and I gave him a big fat him a bonus because he did so well. But if he crossed ya after I recommended him, he'd know that I'd hunt him down. LOL However if you go out looking for the cheapest, rock bottom bid, then you probably already know what you can expect.

Fer pity sake the thread is as old as methuselah. Why is it still here?

Found this in a search, having a very similar problem with a fence contractor, didn't notice the date.

BUT.... I'm getting a 3pt fence post vibrator, fence roll holder attachment in 6 more days when the public notice expires.

Fool me once - shame on you. Fool me twice - shame on me!

Fire him and shoot him if he trespasses on your property to get his abandoned forms.

Thread hasn't been updated since 2006 and OP hasn't posted here on TBN since 2010, so I imagine the problem is resolved by now!

I've learned a lot from the revival of "zombie threads". Never a concern for me.

Keep them coming.

I gonna look for the pallets thread

Zombie threads don't bother me either. I think another reason for them is at many forums (not this one), Some of the posters will quickly jump in and say that something has been dealt with several times and to use the search function.

I was hoping that thread was "Closed"... Might need to make some political statement on the pallet thread!! :D

Nah, don't do that.
I enjoyed some creative imagination that was on there, just about as good as alternative facts.

An update in a case like this would have been "nice". Maybe says as much about the poster as contractor.

Of course, he might just have become part of some structure, like Jimmy Hoffa.

This story happens every day in every town across america. I dont' necessarily think these contractors are all bad people or have bad intentions but they are simply not capable of running a business. In most cases "contractors" are simply people who know how to do a certain kind of work, ie Electricians, plumbers, masons, roofers, etc... But not experts at hiring people, managing workflow, etc...

It seems that the least specialized they are the worse the performance is. These "1 truck Johnny" contractors who do everything from remodels, to pole barns, to dirt work are simply willing to take on any job to try and stay busy as opposed to experts at doing any of those things. They always need money up front, likely to finish the last job, and will ask for more than what was agreed to when the job was started becasue they "missed" something. It's a SSDD story from contractors. Working commercial construction is different as they are all under GC's contract and you can force them to do what's necessary so they can get paid. Homeowners never do that, they always try to handle everything themselves to save money and it turns out a disaster. The OP's issue are textbook. I blame the homeowner just as much as the contractor in these cases.

I was reading an ad on our local town website yesterday and my first thought was "RUN!" after I read it. Keep in mind I know this person and worked as a PM where he was a foreman. With supervision he was quite capable but on his own he is a disaster. I guess he is desperate for work, her is his ad.

CONTRACTOR ^%$# ^^%%$# IS SCHEDULING JOBS FOR 2017. JOHN IS AN EXPERIENCED CONTRACTOR WHO BUILDS HOUSES. HE ALSO REMODELS HOMES AND BUSINESSES. CALL HIM AT

Any good contractor around here would never have to advertise. His 2017 would be pretty much booked up.

I needed some painting done years ago and found an ad at the supermarket. Painter charges fifteen dollars an hour or something like that. Guy shows up, looks at job and says, as he strokes his beard, "looks like a thousand dollar job" or something along those lines.

Anyway, I HIRE him at his per hour rate! He's been in jail for killing someone in a bar (supposedly) and had no shortage of DRAMA in his life. GFs, Kids, childrens aid, rehab, the law, repo people looking for his car, you name it

BUT, he was a GREAT painter! And seemed like a nice guy.
