I picked up a Hoppy's conroller at Wally World.....as I don't tow very often and wanted to save a few bucks (they are only about $58). Hopefully it will do the job. I was about to everything up, and looked over the job. The Hoppy has 4 color coded wires....and the harness that came with my GMC (Acadia) has five wires.

I dont know what to do with the extra (grey) wire found on the GM harness. Is this similar to all GM harness's? .....or do I need to dig out my GM owner manual and read...lol.

Thanks for any advice.

Not sure if your Hoppy's controller has the same 4 color wiring but here's a link diagram that shows the standard 4 wire controller wiring to the trailer plug. Yours has 4 wires, that's all you need. You just need to figure which 4 wires on the Acadia match the drawing. I did check on another forum and found the Acadia wiring harness hooks up to a Tekonsha 4 wire controller as follows.
Acadia ------ Tekonsha
Red/Blk ------ Blk
Blk ------ Wht
Blu ------ Blu
Wht ------ Red
Gry ------ Not used
Double check your wiring since info from other forums may not be correct.

Yes, read the directions. You do not necessarily match the colors up. The unused wire is for a dash dimming feature that your entry level controller does not have. What it does is adjust the back lighting on the controller like your dash lights when they are adjusted.

Just to recap, do not match up wires. Read the directions. RED may not connect to RED, ect.

OK....that clears up why the extra wire. I have read the hoppy's install sheet but they didnt make note of the extra wire on my GM harness....and was not sure if all GM's are the same. I need to explore my GM owner manual too. Thanks Chris.

I am not too sure you will find a whole lot about it in the owners manual other than where to plug it in and if a fuse/relay is needed for the 12Volt positive lead on the 7 round plug and where to place that fuse/relay in the fuse box.

You will find all the directions needed to hook it up with the GM wiring harness and the controller itself.

OK....I FINALLY (don't ask) got my brake controller hooked up according to the wire colors posted above. THANKS George!!

Nowhere in the Hoppy's information was that combination listed....and I'm pretty sure I wudda hooked them up wrong if not for the help. The brake controller seems to work very well...maybe not high priced (I think it was $50) or fancy...but applies the brakes just fine. Thanks again. :)

Heres a pic of my tractor loaded and ready to go up to my land....tomorrow!
