Converting an air filter to ???

I would retrofit the old cylindrical paper element with a new K&N cleanable filter of the same physical dimensions. If you go to the K&N filter site you will find many filter sizes, diameters and lengths for universal applications. One will probably fit or be very close to the dimensions of your existing element. And you won't ever need to buy another air filter again.

( Instead of a flat car filter, think about a Donaldson cyclone type after market filter. These are made for dusty applications. They have a vane system at the input that swirls the air to spin out the bigger dust and dirt particles. These settle on the sides of the canister and then fall out the bottom through a rubber squeeze valve. Donaldson makes these filters in a variety of sizes. There are equivalents by other manufacturers too. Heavy equipment/truck parts suppliers will stock these filters and replacement elements.

The replacement elements for these aren't as cheap as car filters but, not $80 either.

My Kubota has a cyclone type filter. Don't know who is the original manufacturer of it though. )

The Cub Cadet filter is of that (Donaldson) design. The price however is jacked up to rididiculus in my opinion.

( Jim,

Why don't you check out a Mahindra dealer in your area.

Here's what I paid for my last set of Filters (8 months ago) for my 2615 Gear.

They are "Mitsubishi Genuine Parts":

Engine Oil Filter: 31A40-02100 ($12.44)
Air Filter: 3553 0501800 ($57.98)
Hydraulic Filter: 1964-2509000 ($38.64)
Fuel Filter: MM404879 ($4.47)

I crossed a bunch of these at NAPA and they were going to be more expensive:

Engine Oil Filter: NAPA PN = 1365(Forgot to write down the price)
Air Filter: Napa PN = 6843 ($83.78)
Hydraulic Filter: Napa PN = 7118 ($60.81)
Fuel Filter: NAPA PN = ($5.11) ** Weren't sure this one was an exact match

My Mahindra dealer was much cheaper and I like him a lot so I am happy to give him the business even though he isn't that close to me.

I'd second the vote for one of those cylindrical cone type aftermarket filters. They are all the rage as far as after-market air filters go with Diesel Trucks. They look like they would be a pretty easy retrofit. )

I have priced a few parts thru Mahindra. The prices were identical to Cub.
I buy my oil filters from TSC for around $4.00. It is the same filter as used on some Mitsubishi automobiles.
The Hydraulic filter was $47.00
The Hydro filter was around $41.00 or vise versa on the above.
The fuel filter is $6.50 from Napa.

No.

An oil bath air filter is a setup where air is sucked in thru a pipe, and then has to percolate up thru a cup of oil, ( or ) has to make a turn straight back up and drop many of the heavy particles, and then the air is directed thru a renewable metal floss style filter media that is coated with oil ( due to manifold vacume keeping oil suspended from the cup on the filter media. Air then is passed to the carb.

Oil bat air filters are what you see on many of the old tractors. They are good at removing water and debri.. more efficient than a standard paper filter.. better flow ( more surface area.. ).. better cleaning.

Yeah, you don't want to use an oiled gauze filter like K&N. They are only the rage in diesel truck places where ignorance abounds. Cummins and now GM recommends against the use of oiled gauze as the filter plain lets more dirt and oil through. Enough to damage the turbo and foul sensors. The k&n type filter, there are many copy cats now, are a high flow performance filter. Whenever you let more air through a given area of filter media, you let more bigger dirt through.

My vote is for an air filter restriction gauge. You will likely discover that your dirty filter is not too dirty yet. The next step is a large Donaldson style cylinder filter assembly and filter. These filters are larger with more surface area so that they can collect more dirt before creating restriction. They are paper like OEM and don't have bigger holes like the K&N so the chunks of dirt will stay on the dirty side. 81$ is alot. I think you will find that the replacement donaldson type filter will be much cheaper and last longer. You will come out ahead before long.

The diesels suck in mucho air. The diesels is tractors suck in mucho dirty air. With such tight clearances in these engines, a good supply of highly filtered air is important. Don't go K&N and do use a filterminder restriction gauge.

No I am not kidding. I even asked him if it was GOLD PLATED. This will be the only air filter that I buy from Cub. Donaldson has a nice setup for $25.00 at Surplus Center that is about the same size. I'm just tired of getting screwed. I'll be looking into some type of permanant replacement for the Cub setup or to see if Donaldson make a replacement for the Cub filter. The part number did not match any ot their filters. The reason i think is because Cub has the steel cover on the end. Pop off the cover and put in a standard filter. I can even pul off the vane and place that on a new filter if it is the right size. Or I can shim if out to fit if the filter is a little smaller in diameter. I have to find a softer seat. I feel like I really got s------ on this one.

My Allmand TLB came with a "donaldson type" Isuzu filter. Had a very similar price tag on elements. Called Donaldson, they matched up a unit for me, replaced entire unit with flow restrictor indicator for $51.00 and filters are now $15.00 each. Was definitely worth the time to switch.
