I'm looking to possibly purchase a used Land Pride RTA1550 tiller and I believe it is currently set up with a shear pin. I'm in rocky soil so I'd like to convert it to a slip clutch. To do this, would I simply need to purchase a new PTO shaft with a slip clutch?

Thanks!

I prefer the shear bolt. Thats what i have on my 4ft woods brushbull . Takes around 15 minutes to install new one. I carry extra bolts and tools on the tractor. I use grade 5 bolts. To me shear bolts are better as i don't use my cutter that often....so no need to worry about adjusting the clutch. If that clutch is froze up and you don't know it...well you have bigger problems now !

Good point...maybe a shear bolt would be OK. I've just always heard that a slip clutch is the way to go for a tiller.

The slip clutch is better on a Roto-tiller for my uses.I have lots of rocks also;leave the discharge shute wide open.
It takes about 15 minutes or so to service the clutch every spring, not a big deal.I have two bush-hogs,one with a clutch and one with a shear pin;so familiar with both.I have only sheared a couple of bolts on my BH and it's an easy change out;I would think on a tiller it would happen more often and be a pain.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I agree...I'm going to stick with a slip clutch...

To convert one though to slip clutch, would it merely be just buying a new aftermarket $175 PTO shaft with the slip clutch? I believe the Land Pride PTO shafts are outrageously priced if I'm not mistaken.

My manuals are buried in a storage due to moving; but,I believe the slip clutch is a separate assembly from the shaft. Just add it on. Changes the length also.

Here in the NW with the dampness the slip clutches are a real pain in the rear due to swelling and corrosion seizing them up. I vote for shear pins for simplicity.

My tiller has a slip clutch and like a dope I did not adjust it the first time I used it and hit some roots and it did not slip, hopefully It dident cause any damage. So I adjusted the clutch and it's kind of a pain in the butt, doesn't take that long but trying to guess what tightness is right is a guessing game depending on your soil condition. I see why the shear bolts are a no brainer.

Op, before you spend your money on a slip clutch, why don't you try the tiller with the shear bolts and see how it works out for you, if the shear bolts are a pain then buy the slip clutch and you will have something to compare it to. I find trying something first gives me a frame of reference to judge the second option by.

I concur. Just took me half an hour 45 minutes or so to service my King Kutter tiller clutch this week. Remove a plate to get to the clutch. Loosen up all the bolts. Jam a 2x4 into the tines the fire it up & engage the PTO. Nice bang & the clutch popped free. Cut into the 2x4 an inch or so. Then had to tighten it all back up (2.5 turns after the bolt touches each spring).

I was pissed when I found out my old rotary cutter had a sheer bolt instead of the clutch as my dealer told me before I knew better. But in 3 years I spent 0 minutes dealing with maintenance outside of greasing. At least 4 hours of maintenance in 3 years on my tiller just because of the clutch.

I wouldn't mess with a PTO clutch unless you are in conditions that would break sheer bolts a lot. I never broke any on my rotary cutter even mowing yucca that wbog my machine nearly to the point of stalling. Very fiberous & nasty but to would take it a few seconds to slow it down rather than instantly, which would have broken sheer bolts.
