Cooking oil cheaper than diesel?

Just saw a report last night about burning this stuff .... works fine in a motor - but puts off nitrous oxide(ms?) (nox) which they said is a serious smog maker .... can't see the EPA allowing that to happen.... of course they could always cure that by throwing more $$ at it. $$ from the consumer of course.

Good questions Joe. Same ones I have been asking for a while. I have been talking with my fuel oil supplier and furnace manufacturer and I will begin to burn B10 next winter to heat the house. I will have to change a few o rings to prevent seepage, but thats about it.

He said they have been testing biofueled heat in a bunch of "test homes" locally for a few years now and they have only seen one problem. Several o rings begin to "seep" fuel after a while and need to be replaced with a different material to stop this. Most newer furnaces are already equiped with better o rings at the factory. He says that after inspecting the injector and fire pots on the testers, the biodiesel actually helped to burn off carbon and clean up the injectors and fire pots from when they were burning straight #2.

I have heard that if you just pour straight cooking oil that was filtered into an engine, it will begin to "coke up" or build deposits after a while, but if it is properly treated with lye and methanol, it will burn better than regular diesel. I've not tested any of this myself though. (I would love to start a biodiesel reactor soon though!) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think you'll find that there has been more research done than you think so far. It just isn't hitting the news as much as it should yet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW - The problem with the NOX is being worked out. It's under the "emissions" heading on the page. Regular engines produce NOX too, just not as much as untreated biodiesel engines. Engines with engineering controls fitted should produce less NOX than regular diesel engines soon.

Oh and also, he says that he has several farmers that for the past 2 years will only accept biodiesel deliveries for their farming operations. These are big time operations running combines and tractors costing more than my house each. So far, no one has reported any problems to him that were generated from running Bio-D. I'm not trying to preach thats it's Gods answer to the worlds problems or anything...... It has it's problems like less mpg and stuff. I'm just throwing out info for everyone to chew on.

Bio-diesel is one product, but used cooking oil is something entirely different. My comments were directed entirely at cooking oil. I'm not an engineer, but 2 years on bio-diesel may be long enough for long term problems to show up, and then again it may not. Anything that Tax Cheating Pot Head Willie Nelson is for is suspect to me.

Something else about cooking oil I wonder is will it go rancid in long term storage?

I might as well have been from Missouri.

Hey there joe 1

My cooking oil thought was thrown out in order to show a comparison of oil to oil. Anyway you slice it, it has to be much more expensive to process and deliver liquids in 5 gal at a time instead of bulk. The price of cooking oil to diesel really makes me wonder. I can't understand why they are priced about the same; not splitting quarters and taking into account the close price of each oil. It will just be a matter of time till something will be cost effective. Somewhere I heard Brazil is completely self sufficient on energy to run cars and trucks. If it's done there it might be something we here should seriously consider. I realize it probably will not be "cooking oil" out of the jug. Some tweaking of formula will be needed. Good things are on the way.

By the way, I'm not country but, I like Willie.

I like his music, but anyone that blatently uses any illegal substance, including Marijuana is sending the wrong messge to the young people of our society. Plus, I hate to pay taxes as much as the next guy and do everything legal to minimize them, Willie got way upside down on his. Taxes, like military service, are the dues that honest citizens pay to live in this great country.

Not making this a Willie bashing. Also, not being critical on your cooking oil thread. In fact, it made me think about it.

Thanks

Compared to legal substances like cigarettes that kill 5 million people every year? Or alcohol that kills thousands even from people that dont even drink.

I was just wondering if i could add cooking oil into my diesel tank.

I guess it has to be treated. There are links posted by others above that have kits to teat this stuff. Last night I visited a couple of links posted and it was amazing to me how much is already done on this front. Government studies have lots of good things to say. One guy sells something that can treat 40 -50 gallon of oil a day. One poster here mentions of having a couple vans at work and my company runs 4 vans and a pickup. It would be nice if those little companies could get back that $1 a gallon raise, over the last year, it's sending to Exxon and the oil sheiks.

Speaking of the treatment process....as I understand it there are byproucts from one or more parts of the treatment process and I wondered how those are disposed of.
