Cool down period?

Could it be that they despair of the complexities in explaining it well enuf to prevent misinterpretation for varied cases ; so instead they just shotgun it? Close enuf. No critical thinking required.

No I don't think they are being over cautious. The tractor I have is very basic and the temperature gauge measures engine coolant temperature and is not digital or very precise. Without a digital temp. gauge for just the turbo bearings the operator does not have access to enough information to reduce the cool down time with confidence. To shut it down while still hot causes damage to over cool it before shut down does not. What would your instructions be?

geez spyderlk maybe take a break and just cool down a few just like the turbo after an extended workout. chill. & just enjoy your machinery. & hope the OP was able to get some good info out of this thread, regards

Yes but the owners were smart enough to have the cash to buy the tractor. That eliminates a lot of fools. Those left that have more money then brains will get to pay higher repair bills.
If your poor you have to pay attention or you'll always stay poor.

"all sound advice here. my rule is while the engine is idling several minutes before a shutdown, i'll grab a beer & hang out a while, allowing us both to cool off after a workout. that way we both congratulate ourselves on work well done without any complaints.... :)"

Well, should I put the cold brew in the radiator, or the crank case?

Since I am hardly ever working the tractor in the garage, I will idle down after the job and clean the intake grills and radiator guard. Them at a modest RPM, say 1500 or so, I will drive at a leisurely rate to the garage and by that time JD has simmered down to a safe and stable temp.

Do any of you take few minutes to let your Diesel engine cool down before shutting down completely. This struck me the other day after driving my truck out on the highway. My truck has a turbo that requires me cool down to a specific level. I don't like to shut down my truck with the turbo above a specific temperature. This requires me to take a few minutes to let my truck idle to bring the temp in the turbo down. Does the same apply to SCUT tractors? I know they don't have turbos, but do diesels in tractors need a cool down period.

I put an egt gauge on my truck and let the temps get down to where I like them before shutting down. No gauge on my tractor or my gas vehicles but I let all my vehicles idle for a short time prior to shutting down.

None of my work is so close to the tractor shed that I can shut down immediately after the work is finished. I always have a short drive back to the shed which is my cool down period. I have never seen any of my engines go past normal operating temps anyway. On my drive back, I reduce RPM to 1500 or less as I get close to the shed and start to park. Then I lower all hydraulics and shut it off. I cycle the controls after shutdown to relieve any pressures on the FEL.

I rarely run any of my tractors at full throttle when working. I run just enough RPM to get the work done without lugging the engine. PTO speed on my LS is 1950 RPM but full throttle is 2500 so I don't run more than needed. to do the work. My B26 really screams at PTO speed which is WOT so most of my TLB work is done at 2000 rpm so I am not working it that hard. Again, cool down is lower RPM to 1500 or a bit less while going back to the shop after work. I use the HST like a direct gear when travelling, I keep the HST pedal to the metal and reduce RPM as needed for speed I want to travel. I only reduce HST pedal when needed to climb an incline to keep the RPM up to 1500.

OP here. I also take some time to cool mine down. It's not an excessive a out of time. After working the tractor I back into the garage beside the truck at idle speed. This takes about a minute. Once inside the garage I lower all attachments to relieve any pressure.

As for the truck, I have an EGT gauge for my turbo. To answer spyderlik's comment, if the turbo is too hot the oil in the bearings will essentially cook/bake on, shortening the life of the turbo. I'm sure tractors are similar in this respect.

I don't like making mine scream all the time as well but when your running something like a rotary cutter off the PTO they work best at the full 540 rpm so you need to run you engine at your PTO rpm. In my case that is 2400 RPM. Shredding brushy ground on a hot summer day is when your going to get things warmed up to max and have to pay the most attention to cool down periods.

I'm a little late to the thread, but a few cents in fuel in a reasonable cool down is worth quite a bit of expensive parts. :) Just my two cents...
