If it's not already the case that imported food has to meet USDA requirements, then it should be. As far as labeling food from other countries as such for the implied purpose of making it easy to avoid those foods, won't other countries follow suit and avoid food from the US? I think it's just going to hurt US exports.

I recall plenty of recent cases of E. Coli coming from US produced foods. The country of origin is not the problem, the inspection process, for both domestic and foreign foods, appears to be the problem from where I sit.

I can't say for certain, but it sure seems to me that us avoiding Chinese food is going to lead to the Chinese avoiding US foods. I think we're going to lose out on that deal.

ummmm we arent the one with 3 billion mouths to feed.

NAIS = we want to track you and what you do on your private property

new clean water act says (in a nutshell) if the water sheds off your property then it MUST eventually make its way to a federal waterway and we control that. SO by virute of the Transitive Property we can regulate the water that flows off of your property ie we can tell you want to do on your private property

and to tie the above together nicely add the new executive order that says the Secretary of the Treasury may now seize the property of any person who undermines efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq. <cough The US Fifth Amendment? cough>

and thats game-set-match

Thankyou and goodnight

I think this goes further than how food is handled at the processing stage. It goes all the way back to how its grown.

For those who havent travelled overseas you might get a big surprise at how the rest of the world lives. Its nothing like it is here.

I beg all here to support COOL.

No to NAIS and no to the new Clean Water Act language regarding "Waters of the State".

At least, please educate yourself and make a decision about your own property.

Please also take a look at the Federal land grab in No. Virginia (see PEC and powerline). This could happen to almost any rural area in the country.

Not every country has the strict food sanitation requirements we do in the US. Meats and other products that would be rejected and destroyed because of standards in the US might be considered acceptable product to ship in other countries.
Just recall the dog food from China incident of a few months back.
The COOL gives one an option to not take such a risk.
There's not too much government I have use for, but monitoring food and drugs are one of the few good things the federales supply.

And vice versa, some food ok in USA would not pass in Europe.

I heard in Britain they try to track delivery miles on fruits and vegetables (how many miles it travelled to the store) - it is kinda greenish, but still I would prefer to buy for instance shrimp from Chesepeake bay than from Thailand.

My 0.20 only.

COOL passed the House Ag Committee today!!!

This is good news for US Beef and the US Cattleman! (note that the large packers and the American Meat Institute were against it)

Let's keep NAIS out of the final bill.
