Cool Log Splitter...

The pipe on the 3-pt hitch models works great . . . until it breaks off like it did on my brother in law. He got bruised up pretty bad and was lucky it wasn't worse. The biggest problem I see is that it requires the operator to work out of reach of any safety shutoff mechanism. Not many tools are designed that way, and I suspect there is a reason for that. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I've had a Stickler 3PH splitter for almost 20 yrs. now,and really like it. When I was burning wood I used it all the time. For the past few yrs. I stopprd burning wood so the splitter just sat. I just purchased a four inch wood chipper, and ran into a situation where what do I do with the larger sizes? I remembered the old Stickler. Today I activated the splitter, still works great. As mentioned in post, the key thing to remember is the length should be at least2.5-3.0 ft. Also as already said, working with any power tool, caution is key. At all times, you must know were your hands and feet are. It's kind of neat to split 3'-4' pieces of wood, try that with a hydraulic unit. Another fact, this screw is only turning at 210RPM,pretty slow.

I have not had a problem splitting 16-18 inch (or less) pieces of wood with the stickler. I just put a log on the ground for the pieces to hit as it is pulled onto the screw to prevent any spining. I only cut the wood once to the correct size and I have split lots of cords using this method.

With the splitter attached to the axle of the old 1981 Bronco, the splitter is probably 12-18 inches above the ground anyway.

I knew someone with one of those. Note the usage of the past tense.

This guy was no dummy. Shipyard welder, farmer, sawyer - been around all sorts of dangerous stuff for many years. Was struck in the head when a piece of wood began the propeller action. As he was by himself there were no witnesses so the fine details are not known.

I believe I can use, or most any TBN-type for that matter, dangerous equipment - but for how long? I use a chainsaw all of the time but I'm pretty focused and quit when I'm tired. Wood splitting (for me anyways) is kind of mindless work that drags on for hours. I'm pretty sure I could use the screw safely for short periods but I don't think I would want risk having to stay highly focused for many hours, day after day.
