I've heard of folks eating them. I can see with all the meat on this guy how that's possible. I see those all along in/near my pond not quite as nice as this guy with the sharp shell "mountains".

A large yellow birch we spied on the camp we just bought. Might be the largest we've ever seen and 120ft tall.

While out taking pics of the fall colors in the nearby mountains today I caught a bit of motion out of the corner of my eye. Turned around to see this Mama mule deer and her almost-grown fawns watching me.....
