Did a search on the words 'cool running' and found several hits, including <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=nhown&Number=36892&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post36892>this one.</A>

Do this....your tractor will be happier!!!

This was stolen from a previous post !!!

Problem 1:
Coolant drain lines bypass the thermostat. There is a small (I think it is 5/16" dia) connecting hose from the block to the radiator so the antifreeze can be drained from a single petcock. If you are sitting on the tractor, it is on the right side of the engine. This hose can allow coolant to circulate from the block to the radiator without the engine warming up because it is bypassing the thermostat.

If your Boomer is currently running cool there is an easy test to see if it has this problem. Clamp off or pinch the drain line between the engine and radiator about midway between the radiator and drain petcock. Use a small c-clamp or vise grips to pinch the hose temporarily. Cover the jaws with something and be careful not to damage the hose when clamping. If the engine warms up quickly and stays running at normal temperature you have the drain line bypass problem.

The solution is to install a shutoff valve in the drain line. I have heard of 2 ways of doing this.

Method 1: Install a new fitting on the engine block that has a threaded plug that acts as a valve. This is what my dealer did to my TC45D and is apparently the NH recommended fix. This method is also suppose to fix the coolant leak problem where the fitting threads into the block.

Method 2: Insert a valve in the drain hose itself.

The attachment is a reprent of a photo posted here before.

It was my pic and I'm glad to share it, a visit to McMaster-carr online and the problem was solved. See this post<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=nhown&Number=76226&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post76226>http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=nhown&Number=76226&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post76226</A>

went ahead and made the repair, wont know the results til we have a chance to run the tractor a bit. Wonder why New Holland didn't just put a check valve in there to begin with.Any of you guys had a chance to install a temp gauge wherer there is only a light now? Thanks for the good reading,we really enjoy it ! Lloyd from CT.

The tc only have an idiot light for temp? My 1920 has one of those green yell ow red needle gauges.. but has no temps listed...... guess I cound switch it out, now that I think about it.

Noticed I was bushhogging the other day in super mega thick dog fennel and ragweed... prescreen for the radiator kept plugging up.. first time I noticed it, I was just in the red... though my recovery tank hadn't filled yet, nor was the radiator boiling over or venting. At that time I got into the habit of just stopping every 20 minutes to clean it.( and clean it.. and clean it.. etc ).

If you use your tractor around or in brush, I'd make one modification to Kevin's modification. About two weeks ago, I had my hose ripped off the engine-mounted valve and I was completely helpless as I watched all my antifreeze run into a puddle on the ground./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif There was no way I could stop fluid since the hose was pretty badly mangled and the clamp was nowhere in sight./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif I had no choice except to walk back to my house and go on a shopping trip for a couple of gallons of antifreeze and a clamp./w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif When I returned, I rerouted the hose as shown in the attachment (behind and over the frame mount, shown by the white arrow). There are no moving parts there and it provides a little additional protection for the hose. You might have to loosen the clamp that holds the hose to the frame to make rerouting easier. In my case, I had plenty of hose even after cutting off 1-1/2". ...just a suggestion.

Good advice Jim: I did as you did and moved the hose out of the danger zone as much as possible, problem is mine still does not want to heat up w-o putting cardboard over half the radiator. I am installing a temp ga also, only way to tell what is going on.
