Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

The dealer says it is normal just as long as the needle does not go up to red. Is that right?
No, at least not according to my Owner's Manual, which reads, "If the needle registers in the green range of the gauge, this indicates a normal operating temperature." There are three areas on my gauge, from cold to hot they are; Black, Green and Red. If it's not in the Green area, it's not normal.

35DMAN: You havent filled out your profile ( please do this so we can answer your questions ) but I assume you have a TC35D from your name. Check out another post called "no-heat" and you will see the recent "buzz" about TC35/40/45 cool-engine issues. It's amazing that NH still hasn't fixed the bypass or the thermostat at the factory.

Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

It is amazing, these are not in-expensive machines, and this is a relativly simple fix-One things for sure with a good tstat and the right valve closing off the bottom the tractor heats right up-no cardboard in front of radiator and stays at 175-185 steady. Just tell your dealer to fix it right the first time.

Hazmat
I was out yesterday for 2 hours, spreading gravel on the driveway. The temp. was around 20 with the wind chill around 5. The needle never got over 1/4 on the temp.guage.

Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

I was out cutting wood yesterday (mid teens)
and the 35D was up to temp by the time I got
trailer hooked up. (mid range in green).
I need to get pics off laptop to show the
load we cut (12'x6'x4'+high) about 1 1/2 cords
(about 8500#) and got out thru muddy corn
field.
We got snow before ground froze completely,
just kept breaking thru crust.
The L2900 gst kubota wouldn't have done it.
W/ the hydro I could go faster then when it pulled
down just ease up on speed, get thru that spot and
take off again.

Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

I felt the lower hose after 20 minutes of working it hard (engine bogging down under load occasionally) plowing and pushing back the banks with the loader. It was warm, but by no means hot. My highly calibrated finger estimates closer to 100deg than 180.

Time to re-read all the posts & deterimine a couse of action. Like others I like to elinate the little things before taking it in to the dealer. Wishing I spent the bucks on the service manual about now.

Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

Not sure how similar the TCs and TNs are from a design standpoint beacuse I did not look at the TCs in detail, but my TN takes a long time to warm up when the temp is low (less than 30-40 degrees). However, in about ten minutes it hits the low green portion of the temp gauge while running at ~1000 rpms. Will run in the low to mid green under load.

Anyone try blocking part of the grill off to reduce air flow? This is standard winter procedure on big trucks. Not sure how much it will help on a tractor since the low speed does not generate much air flow anyway.

Just for reference (in case you need to recalibrate your finger): for most people, 140 degrees F is too hot to comfortably leave their bare hand on (with a firm touch), but they can touch it briefly without pain (this may not hold true on some materials which do not conduct heat well, but I know from 15 years working in a steel wire mill that it definitely holds true for touching metal). Of course there are those people around whose hands have become desensitized to heat from years of handling hot items.

Re: Cool Running TC\'s: Is it only the big boys?

Phred,

I have a TC35D that had the cooling problem. After two trips to the dealer and being told that it was nothing to worry about, I read of similar problems in past postings on TBN. I blocked about half of the radiator with cardboard and that put the operating temp. right in the center of the green range.

Just to make a long story short--I finally got the dealer to address the issue, and the tractor now warms up to normal range during cold temps.
