Just a follow up on my progress.
I got my hydraulic fluid changed out today.In the course of doing this I found the breather vent to the gear box pretty well plugged, and got it cleaned up.
I think this could be a big part of the water problem, due to condensation.
The local equipment dealer dropped of a 6 ft. mower today while I was in the process of doing the fluid and saw the stuff I had drained. He didn't seem to be alarmed and he also thought that condensation was the likely culprit.
I'll keep an eye on it, and thanks again for the good info and advice.
