A couple of hours isn't enough test, but so far so good. I carefully cleaned the oil cooler, replaced the screens on the sides, and mounted the centrifugal filter on the back. Most of the cooling and engine air come from the back, although the engine also draws through the side screen.
I posted a picture of the filter in a couple of the other threads. It is from Maple Grove Plastics, in Canada.
Results so far: At full throttle, with the 72" rough-cut mower, towing a 54" Kunz Acrease rough-cut wing mower, the temperature went to 220 in 80 degree ambient, and stayed there without wavering for two hours of mowing. The filter didn't rotate even at full throttle before I mowed, so I thought there wasn't enough air flow to turn it. It turned enough while mowing, however, to keep itself clean. There was no chaff stuck to it when I stopped, although there had been a fairly large amount kicked up, and some stuck to the sides screens.
We're about to get a barrell of rain, so the next chaff test may be a while.

It sounds funny to wish you were having a drought, doesn't it? :)

So is the cleaner not spinning fast because it doesn't have enough air flow due to the open sides of the PT engine compartment?

MR:
When we did our test install, we covered the sides with cardboard and still didn't get filter rotation, although, curiously, it moved a bit at idle and stopped at higher RPMs.
The usual installation is completely covering a radiator.
I couldn't see it from the seat, but when I stopped to move an obstacle, it seemed to be turning. Since the hydraulic fan was running, maybe that boosted flow just enough to turn it.
Bottom line, it kept pristine clean, so it was slinging the chaff.
After another couple of hours, I'll inspect the cooler to see what got past the filter (or through the screen or bottom holes, etc.)

Charlie,

Couple of questions:

- Which model did you order (what size)?
- Did you order from the factory or a dealer?
- Do you remember the rough price range?

Thanks.

- I think it's the 2212.(I'm not sure if the paperwork will ever resurface.) I talked to them on the phone and that was their recommendation since I was considering having the sides of the engine compartment closed in rather than screened.
- I ordered from the factory
- I bought it three years ago. My recollection is it was about $300, but, as noted above, paperwork has gone missing.

Charlie, if you get a chance, would you measure the diameter of the round part of the filter. Judging from the specs on the manufacturer’s site, I wonder if that filter isn’t a bit too big for the air flow the PT can generate (if so, it might be possible to increase the air flow with an auxiliary fan though). Also, do you think it’s possible to remove the round part of the filter, relatively easily of course, so it can be relocated directly in front of the PT fan? The company makes a filter with a 13” diameter for 50 HP applications. If this filter could be removed from the mounting bracket and placed directly in from of the PT fan, it might completely solve our problems.

I’ve posted your picture on this thread to keep them together for future readers.

Thanks.

Marrt:
Mine is the 2212, rated for 100 hp. It is 21 3/4 inches in diameter.
I think the 50 hp model would be better. It could be mounted to the expanded metal right in line with the fan, and would probably spin even without sealing between the fan and the filter.
Taking it apart and remounting would be more difficult, since the base mounts the metal work for the axle. It could be done, however, if you built a frame right at the engine fan housing
If you went that far and sealed the centrifugal filter to the fan housing, I agree that it would probably solve the problem, and you could cut the rear expanded metal so you didn't have to remove the filter to tilt the engine cover back. (I'm going to forget one day and crush it against the trailer hitch.)

The top section of a 5 gallon bucket fits right over the PT-1845 fan inlet gasket. If cut just long enough to fit behind the grill it can't come off when the house is closed. Voila....

Scaring off the trees I keep backing into may be a bit tougher...

You'll only do that once, and it's back to screen wire.:D
