Cooper Discoverer vs. Yokohama Geolander

I have four studded Discoverer ST's on my Tundra for winter tires. The pictured Yokohama's don't appear to be studable, which for me is a prerequisite, given the freezing rain we get in coastal Maine. They also work well in snow of any kind

I can't comment on the Cooper's but I run the Yoko's on my 04 Ram 2500 and love them. Last year when we had several 12"+ storms I had no way to plow my drive way and just drove out until the snow was gone each time. The first major snow I actually had to drive in it the whole time and only got loose once when took a turn a bit fast. They are quiet on the highway and great in the mud.

It sounds like you wouldn't go wrong either way you went between those tires. Having run the BFG A/T's before I wouldn't again solely because I don't feel you get a huge benefit with the price they are. I think they are a great tire but for the price difference I love the Yoko's. I bought mine from tirerack and had them shipped to my mechanic who put them on. I probably have 20k on mine and they look new. They also seem to clean out well after getting mud in them.

I've had the Cooper ST's for my Tundrasince 2004-they are only ran in the winter. They have 25,000 miles on them with acceptable, balanced wear-probably 40% of legal tread left. They have provided great winter and snow traction. I'll use them this winter and probably keep them for a spare set-I'll get a new set for next winter.

I put Cooper ATR's on for three season driving. I just took them off the truck for winter-22,000 miles and they have wear unevenly, have only about 25% of legal tread left-this from a truck that sees relatively light use.

Looks like it's going to be Yokohama. A friend of SWMBO's father works for Yokohama and can get the tires direct at employee pricing, 50-60% of retail.

A few years back I got fed up with the poor traction of the old, hard and worn out tires I had on my 1994 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy so I went hunting for a nice new set of tires and specifically asked for ones that would give me the best traction on ice and hard packed snow. They showed me a Cooper Discovery M+S tire and it looked like it would be just what the doctor ordered, lots of siping and they could be studded also. I bought a set (with studs) and I found they were all that they said they would be, and I certainly would recommend them. I also have a second set of rims & tires that are better suited for summertime usage.

Oh, BTW, these are a true winter/snow tire, complete with emblem.

I have always had good luck with Coopers. I had the ATRs and liked them a lot.

I has the Coopers on my 3/4 ford . Destroyed 3 of them in 6 months due to side wall gashes and ripping off lugs. Put on the Yokohoma's which were way cheaper and look brand new after a year. The yoko's are also ten ply synthetic which helps alot on tread wear. Have not got stuck yet.

looks like you made your decision, but my Dad uses the geolanders and they get superb traction in the snow and ice here in Eastern Oregon. I had Coopers once and they were okay but wore out in 40,000 miles.

First impressions of the Yokohama Geolanders: Much quieter than I expected from an all terrain tire. Previous experience with BFG AT's and others had me anticipating a lot of roar. These tires are as quiet as all season tires. Vehicle ride is firmer, which I had hoped would be the result. The Goodyear SR-A's were too soft and bouncy for my taste. Overall, very pleased with my choice.

I have the Geolandars on my Explorer, and they are really good tires. My only complaint is that when they were new they had a slight tramp on smooth pavement. Traction is unbeatable. I have 80,000 km's on them now, and they are almost due for replacement. Will be getting another set.
