well folks,
over the last 2 months I have found a few copperheads around the property but NONE near the house..
The first 2 were on the ATV trail..
killed them with the tractor bucket.. Got lucky one was on a rock and I cut it to pieces! and the other was nearby and tried to strike the bucket.. I smashed it...

Well this afternoon I found the third...
It was under a woodpile that I was cleaning up..
6 logs all stacked togather about 15 feet long.

I pulled the first log off, cut it into thirds, and moved the thirds...
Pulled the second log off and cut 1/3 of it off and pushed the rest aside.
I then pulled another down, and cut it into half (smaller diameter) and moved it to the trailer with the rest..

Then I decided that the last 2 smaller diameter logs were not worth the effort... and pushed them over the bank figuring that they would stack up and hold the dirt I was planning on pushing that way...

That is when it showed up..

It was right there in front of the tractor bucket and I tried to cut it up..
BUT the ground was soft and that was not going to happen..

I figured it would come back closer to dark.. 30 min later I went out with the lil ole 22 and put some shots into the ground where he disappeared---
Yes I know the safety police will be out shortly...

nothing--

then about 20 min ago, I walked out on the front porch and thought I saw something over there...

grabbed the 22, loaded it up and headed out the door.

(it has a 17 shot tubular magazine, an old Stevens 87J-- I am almost positive this thing is 40+ years old and still shoots GREAT-- Dad gave it to me almost 20 years ago, and I know he had before I was born)

got down there and it was laying about where I tried to cut it with the loader...
and it had flies on it's tail end....

I climbed up on the last log there and commenced shooting..
Actually enjoyed this---

I hit it and it moved, I shot right behind the head and it turned towards me. 3 shots and almost cut it in half...

I was sure it was dead. --- for those reading slowly---- insert dramtic pause-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

pause over!!

then with the shovel I pulled it up and tossed it on some flat ground--
and here it is:

It measures just shy of 3 feet..

Looks like it had a mouse in it's belly-- that came out when I shot it...

sorry for the blurry pics.. from my phone and it was getting dark...

It had a pretty color scheme... albeit deadly...

I left it where I took the pic.. I want to see if something comes and gets it..

Wow! Things sure get exciting down there in North Carolina! Makes me glad it's too cold in Minnesota for copperheads.

Stay safe!

Copperheads give all snakes a bad name. I'm too lazy to figure out which are Copperheads and which are not so just kill them all on sight to be sure. Except for Black snakes which are kinda obvious.

Glad you got em. It may be stereotyping but I believe that the only good snake is a dead snake. Been here for two years now and have killed 4 rattlesnakes on the property and had one get away.

Today I saw an alligator in the lake. If he leaves me alone, I'll leave him alone. :)

Not many snow storms up here...just green tractors.

I'll take snow any day over your zoning 'weather'

Don't know what it is about snow that turns people off :D

Wow, makes me glad we don't have too many poisonous varieties around here. I generally let them pass (non-poisonous), but they do creep me out a bit when they suprise me.
I'll stick to shooting my groundhogs, a little less exciting, but more my speed.

As for the weather, I work in a foundry (hot). I moved from Virginia to a cooler environment to get away from those balmy sunny days and 120 degree workplace temps. It only gets to 110 in the shop here:laughing:

Mostly true, the temperature gets nearly as hot here but does not drag on for weeks like it did in VA.
Main reason I came to Ohio was for the change of seasons. I grew up in the north, kinda like the snow.
It's beautiful here in the wintertime. Cold.........but beautiful.

RadarTech -

I killed two around my house last year... none seen yet this year (knock on wood). An old logger once told me that if you were running a chainsaw on a log pile the snakes would get away... so much for that advice. I have several logs piled up which I will be cutting shortly... I will be very careful... especially after your post.

Not very close to Asheville... I am north of Durham... about half way between Durham and Roxboro. I used to travel to Asheville with my job before I retired... pretty country, but a little too much winter weather for me... I grew up in upstate NY, and don't miss the snow and cold at all. I've been "down south" for 32 years now, so I consider myself a southerner... way past the "**** Yankee" period.
