Is there a device like a CNC plasma cutting table that follows a pattern, armstrong powered?
edit: or is it easier to just cut around a pattern?

ESAB used to have 2 versions. One used an electric eye to follow a drawing. The other used a knurled roller that would roll along a cut out metal patern on the top of the machine and cut the same part below on your table. No CNC on either one. I see these for sale from time to time. Seems like one was called an Auto-Graph or something like that.

I was thinking about one of those.. but I guess if you can just run the torch around a pattern, it's more like what I would be doing. A torch held by something other than my hand would probably be steadier tho.

We have one at my job, its called a surfograph. It is great for production work but very complicated to program, and if making one off projects its not really worth the time for the set up process. Our unit is very old tho and im sure the newer ones would be a little easier on the programing end. But very good unit like I said for production work if you offset your patterns you can really get your moneys worth out of a sheet of steel.

My Hypertherm plasma is made for drag cutting.....and made to guide along next to a template...be it cardboard, plywood...or metal.

This one is a Powermax30....cuts up to 1/2".

This is what I made . I just make a template out of plywood and the syltus follows the shape and the parts come out very clean. It is great for smaller parts and multiple pieces.
