Any opinions about who makes a great cordless telephone? I see that 5.8GHz phones are out from folks like VTech and Uniden. My old Panasonic is now a play toy for our little boy. It was a 2.4GHz and while it worked, was great. Panasonic is not making 5.8GHz phones to my knowledge. The free ATT 2.4GHz someone gave us is dogdew. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Rat...

Rat -- I've found some excellent reviews on Amazon.com and Epinion.com. I have a 900MHz Panasonic that I love and a Siemens 2.4GHz that I'm getting used to

Rat, I don't know enough about technology and what makes 5.8Ghz better than 2.4Ghz or any other number. But we bought a Panasonic KX-TG2388BP (Triple Talk) from Sam's Club the first of November. 3 cordless handsets, each with its own charger, but only one base phone, 2.4Ghz, all digital answering system, intercom between handsets, handset speaker phones (great for us old folks wearing hearing aids), call waiting/caller ID, and love them; best phone system we ever had. And other folks like them so well, we had to buy another set for one of our daughters for Christmas. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I just picked up a Uniden TRU448, 2.4 GHz at HD for $35!!! Normally $84.....it even has an answering machine built in. I have an old Lucent that is on it's 3rd battery and is still going. Didn't really need one but I'm a sucker for clearance items!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

900 mhz will give you maximum distance and penetration of buildings.
2 and 5 ghz units offer half the distance and 1/4 the penetration.
You can get simple 1 line 900mhz phones for under $20- these days, and toss em when the battery craps out.

Hmmm, I had a different experience. My 900 MHz Panasonic had a fraction of the distance of my 2.4GHz Panasonic. The 900MHz is still working but is on its last legs. The 2.4GHz died a few months ago and was much newer. The performance of my Panasonic 2.4GHz was quite superior to the 900MHz. The battery would last about a week or longer off the charger with the 2.4 and about 3 days with the 900. I know that all these things vary greatly from one brand to another. Thanks for the input. I checked Amazon and the comments tend to favor the VTech in the 5.8 GHz and Panasonic in the 2.4GHz. The 900 MHz are almost free anymore. Rat...

We tried the siemens 2.4ghz but our wireless computer network interfeared with it so we had to return it and replace with a ATT 5.8ghz which is working well.

I have a 900 Mhz DSS Sony that I love. We have a little over 7 1/2 acres with our sitting toward one corner of the lot. I've been able to walk all over the yard and still talk on the phone. I had this phone at work for awhile and I worked in a fairly large building and I could go across the building and up/down 2 floors and it would still work. We also have a Uniden 900 Mhz w/ built in answering machine and the only reason we keep it is because of the am. Don't want to buy a new am because I swear one of these days I'm going to get rid of the landline - but right now DirecTV still wants one. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif - But I'm still holding out. This is the 3 Uniden phone I've had and they've all been crap. Mom kept buying them for me as she'll believe anything a salesperson will tell her, but if it has Uniden on it, I won't ever touch it again.

Our 900 Mhz Sony has been great also. DSS (digital spread spectrum) seems to make all the difference in range and reception.

We've gone through several at church (secretary is HARD on them /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif), and the common thread in the good ones appears to be the DSS.

Sears had a display recently of 900mhz phones with some nice features for $10, that is after $10 rebate. Came with nice belt clip, 40 channels, memory, volume control, etc. Can't beat it for $10.
