We have some post anchors to remove and someone suggested core drilling. I got a quote from a driller to drill out 4 post anchors (4x4 posts, the deepest hole might be 18", others a lot less) and he said about $1,000 including travel, 35 mi. each way.

I thought that was a little high and found Home depot rents the equipment for $104 for 1 day's use. So are these tools hard to learn? Is the project a reasonable DIY thing?

You want to remove anchors by drilling? I'm not getting it. The coring equipment rented by HD is for concrete and might be able to go to 12 inches. Typically concrete coring is usually shallower. Not sure if they rent the core bits or make you buy them, but they aren't cheap.

I don't understand your situation, you have 4x4 posts set in the concrete or some sort of 4x4 anchor base set into the concrete?
What's the situation and desired end result? New posts or just filled and smoothed over.

Man, I'd just get some large wood bits and start drilling out the wood posts and chisel them out with a spud.

Um, I dont get it either.

4x4 post.....18" or less.......

What are they in? And what is the desired result?

I think he's got 4x4s embedded in concrete and was thinking about having someone core out a circle of concrete right over the 4x4 stub so he'd have a nice, round hole where the square 4x4 used to be. Seems like a good idea until you find out how much core drilling costs!

I've had to be involved with some core drilling in my last I.T. job placing floor mount power/network taps under conference tables, desks, etc... we dreaded getting the estimate to drill 3" (as I recall) cores through the concrete floors. It's very, very expensive.

I had about a dozen drilled in my poured concrete basement walls when we built. I don't remember the exact cost, maybe $400-$600? They varied from 1" (hose bib lines) to 5" (septic line). Travel was part of it since the guy came from KY to TN. There's not a lot of folks that do it. Captive market!

I've done some boring and would not recommend renting and diy. 1st off the bits are very expensive and if you don't know what you're doing you'll be buying them. Well you'll be buying at least one, I doubt they rent them. You could be buying many to get done. 2nd, without a smooth slack l slab you mount to and start the drill into you'll never get a straight hole.
