We started harvesting corn Tuesday and it is hard to believe how the corn has dried. Last week we checked some and it was 22% and by Tuesday it was 18 to 19%. Everything is going smooth so far. Our fuel man says he may not be able to get us enough fuel to do any fall tillage. Our forecast is hot and dry so we should be able to move right along.

How are your yields compared to your expectations?

Most of the corn we have been in has been around 140 to 150. That isn't too bad for as dry as it has been here. Some areas just to the south of me (20 miles or so) is seeing some 45 to 60 bu. corn. We did get some rains that others close by didn't. Most of the rain was spotty so We are pretty happy so far. I have heard some stories of 200 bu corn but I believe they are just stories. Last year we had alot of 80 to 100 bu. corn so a big improvement over last year.

deere755,
Well, I'll certainly have a good thought for you. I hope the weather holds up for a good harvest. And, all that can go wrong with the equipment during harvest season.
Good luck.

I find your yields interesting. The stories were that IL was in big trouble and your yields are better than last year. Can they take the corn price any lower? Our elevators are full, and harvest is coming.

I hope the prices are up for you since Katrina passed through. A friend of mine had about 1200 acres and estimated a really good crop, but he hadn't gathered it yet because it wasn't dry enough. All of it's laying on the ground today. The hazards of farming... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think we are in a very isolated area of Illinois. as for last year we had a very poor year, root worms , down corn, and no rain. This year we have had a couple good rains that were isolated to our area. Most of the people I have talked to say their yields are very low. You don't have to go very far any direction to get into very dry areas. I think we will run into this as we get away from our main farm. Our big local processers (ADM and Tate & Lyle) are full too. Tate & Lyle was closed today and will close at noon on Monday. They are not sure about Tuesday yet. Storage could be very tight this fall.

Glad to hear a part of IL has a good yeild.
A few weeks ago I was coming back from Bennett Springs, MO andI was cruising down IL Route 4 from St. Louis area (Mascoutah/Marissa/Sparta) and the corn looked horrible, beans looked worse.
Down around where I live though crops aren't too bad. A guy I know at Wolf Lake, IL has spots in his corn where it didn't do to good, but it is an area of a feild that has alot of sand to it and he said it is an iffy area each year. He is right on the Mississippi and Big Muddy Rivers.
Tate and Lyle, I am guessing you are near Decatur? My fiance has a freind that her husband works there.

Got any good pheasant hunting or quail hunting on any of your farm?
My fiance wants to go visit her freind up there, but I have told her during hunting season If I take off of work I am going to be bird hunting, I am already taking 6 days off for our honeymoon, that leaves 4 between now and then that I have to take off.
