Corollary to RaT\'s \"How Many Hours?\"

Does a service contract pay for a new CUT?

I have had mine for nearly a year, unless I am mistaken, I still have a chance to get my best deal on a service contract. Should I?

Has anyone not gotten it and sorely wishes (s)he had? Who has bought one, and either thought it saved their hide, or just another piece of insurance?

In my opinion, service contracts, also known as extended warranties or buyer protection plans, are an excellent deal....for the sellers. During the past twenty years we have bought several new vehicles, my JD, two ATV's, tens of thousands of dollars worth of computers, appliances, power tools, and assorted electronic gadgets and the ONLY time I purchased an extended warranty was for a new 1984 car.
The $615 (plus finance charges) covered about $500 worth of repairs during a 60 month period.

It amazes me than when you buy a consumer item these days you get all these assurances from the seller THIS product is the best one you could spend your dollars on, but for a few dollars more a month you can extend your warranty coverage....if the product is so great why do they even NEED to mention a service contract.

Because the places who sell the extended warranty usually earn more money on that item than they do on the original purchase. NONE of the purchases we have made after the 1984 car required repairs that would have been covered under an extended warranty. NONE OF THEM. No way I would waste the money, especially for a quality product like John Deere.

IMO, it's just another profit maker for the seller.

I can onlyl put a ditto on JD's statement. I stay away from the extended warranty issues.

Double Ditto for me as a rule of thumb /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I did buy an extended warranty on my very first new car (1989 Ford Thunderbird). It actually did pay off as I had a transmission rebuilt under the warranty and all it cost me was the $25 deductible and the $400 I had to pay for the 6yr/100k warranty.

At that time the cost wasn't nearly as high as it is today, so $400 wasn't that bad.

I guess bottom line to me is the following. 1) is the price reasonable and the coverage good. 2) and most important on something I have already owned for a while would be "have I had any issues to date?" if not, then I would probably skip extending it. If I was having problems, I would probably trade it so either way, I guess it still comes down to now for me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I read someplace many years ago that Ford's extended warranties were their largest profit center. I assume that is the case for most quality items.
