Are the US producing enough of basic food to cover it's own needs?

I think we are a long way from starving. We are closer to having to eat something that isn't your first choice.

Yes, lot of hoarders and the media is spreading a lot of fear for some reason. So if the US has large enough agricultural production to cover the need you should be OK even if this thing escalate to a big crisis. Shall be very interesting to see what happens to the holy grail of globalisation, here in Norway we have had globalists that argued that our food production was to inefficient and we should shut down all the farming, the idea was if you had money you could always be able to buy what you wanted, suppose we don't hear much about those ideas now.

This is gotta be a first to have the 5th generation of a shut down thread. We are plowing new ground here Mark.
Yeah, it's shutting down as much as the stock market!
I'm vague on exactly what was said, but I thought I heard in a news conference that the government was asking Construction Companies to come forward with their supplies of masks? Something about dust masks used in some elements of construction are the type needed for health care personnel to protect themselves from Coronavirus? Maybe someone can clarify that better?
Good tight fitting N95 masks, like dual cartridge painters mask are said to work.
There are currently no food shortages...increased demand has caused some short term supply issues at end of the line markets...
With the border shutting down who is going to pick the veggies? Process the chickens?

I haven't heard anything about shutting the Mexico border?

The terrorists have been trying to weaponize a virus for years...in some ways the media has beaten them to it...!

Baltimore Mayor Begs Residents To Stop Shooting Each Other So Hospital Beds Can Be Used For Coronavirus Patients

Maybe Chicago's Mayor should do that.

Just In Time delivery is faith based... Faith the cogs working in unison... amazing when it all works... not so good when the weak link snaps.

The chicken capitol of the US is about an hour and half away from here...the last time I was over there it was like being in Mexico population wise...

I hope such a event as this will open the eyes of people and government to stop the long term idea of bigger and bigger farms, smaller farms over large areas will be a more robust system when a crisis hits. Food and animal care should not be considered as a industry in the same way as a car factory, it's essential for national security.

The Mayor was basically addressing the gangs where most of the violence lies, where you have to earn your bones by "capping"
one of the other gang's men. And then you have retaliation, and they are constantly shooting at each other.

I was just sent an email containing a video of Bill Gates speaking to a large group in 2015 and he described what is going on now with chilly exactness.
He foretold exactly what is happening now, with pictures of red viruses and described what had to be done. And our government didn't listen well enough.
He said we needed to get moving because time was running out. Truly extraordinary, must be on Youtube somewhere.
This very bright man told us this would happen and we needed to be prepared.

I have 2, 3M cartridge masks in the boxes with activated charcoal cartridges. Maybe I should sell them... On seconf thought, maybe I'll call the hospital and ask of they can use them.

I heard and was told that the masks have little to no rejection of the air born virus because the fitment leaves gaps that it can get into. More of an arcane fashion statement than anything else.

I still believe the best plan is social distancing and staying home and avoiding contact with strangers. Exactly whet my wife and I are doing.

I'm even washing my hands with soap and HOT water after I collect the mail from the roadside mailbox. No point in taking unnecessary risks.
Unless you spray the mail with dissenfectant or look at it and throw it away outside the. Wash before you come in the house your just bringing the virus in with you?

Yes, the fear is dangerous, frightened people pushes politicans to "do" something so they feel they are on top of things, thinking before action can be a better strategy.

Making predictions of pandemics does not take a genius...what I'd like to know is what the richest men in America are doing to help...I do know that the richest man in China (Jack Ma) has given over $500MM worth of supplies to the US...what have Buffet, Bezos, Gates, Ellison etc., etc....pitched in with ???

This is kind of silly...I'd guess most mail carriers/handlers will be wearing gloves as the bigger threat would come from infected persons that licked and sealed envelopes that hold letters/documents that had previously been in close proximity to possibly infected persons...

If you spray the outside of an envelope for protection from the mail carrier etc...what are you going to do with what's inside?
