Correct hydraulic oil for Yanmar FX32?

FWIW: On both my small Yanmar clone and on my Deutz, the dipstick is supposed to be screwed in all the way.

YMMV...

All the best, Peter

That's right. Measure without screwing the dipstick in or pushing it in. That is and always has been standard.

Mercon and other power steering fluids are hydraulic fluids. That's fine for purely hydraulic systems. But in your Yanmar you have a combination sump serving both the transmission and the hydraulics. One system in this combo has sliding friction and bronze parts, the other has bevel gears, rollers, and impactful straight cut bull gears since in most of them the same fluid also lubes the big rear end gears.

So use a fluid designed for both. J20C is a good place to start. Negative on power steering fluid.

Thanks Winston! That's the closest we'll ever see regarding the engine dipstick.

(For the transmission) "Insert dipstick to rest on threads, but do not screw it in."
For engine oil .... nothing declared.

Scotty, I have personally changed over a hundred + power shift tranny fluids from Japanese Yanmars, fresh out of the shipping containers
It seems that they always use automatic transmission fluid on their FX models,
Do they know something we dont?

Thanks! The dipstick for my Excel Hustler mower works the same way. To check the oil level you just put it back in, but don't screw it in, just let it rest on the threads.

Probably it is the other way around. Or maybe they don't read their own manuals. I have no idea what they are thinking.

BTW, how do you know that what you are seeing is automatic transmission fluid?
Any chance it could it be trans/hydraulic fluid with a red dye? That's commonly done by tractor techs here.
Maybe they do the same thing for the same reason.

I spoke with the supplier in japan and that's what he said they use all the time.
The tractors over there are in the watery mud and ATF is full of detergent, so it keeps everything clean inside.
I have used ATF since 1995 in my Yanmars and absolutely no problems.

Yanmar TF500A is dyed red, yet it's J20C.

I don't doubt that you have, and it says a lot about Yanmar quality. But it doesn't tell us anything about the which oil to use other than that ATF is adequate in a limited test....so far. I wish we could say it told us about future wear and lifespan, but I don't think we can say that.

What we have on the one hand is your real world experience that ATF will work.

And on the other hand we have whole industries full of scientists and engineers - as well as the factory guys who actually designed and built these Yanmar tractors - all saying that trans/hydraulic fluid is what they recommend.

Does that about sum it up?
