Most people in the frozen north use 15-40 year round for diesel. Block heaters for real cold weather starting.

I am going to switch to 0-30W in the winter, then back to 15-40W in the Spring.

You put enough hrs on yours to warrant a dual change in 1 year?? I went with a 5W-40 and figure thats "close enough" for my temps here..and my usages too of course.

Very good point. So far, in 6 weeks, only 40 hours. I am not going to change the filter (can I hear people saying, "bad Bob"??) 8 qts of oil (16 dollars??).
And the oil is so easy to drain. And to fill.

What 5-40W do you use? That is a good idea.

I will take a look.

I like running mine so much I got a "bit of heat exhaustion" a week ago. Even though the sun was low in the sky, I worked 4+ hours in high dewpoint/high heat and felt like manure for the rest of the night. Getting old is tough.

The good-old Rotella-T SYNthetic= too bad it is not a real group4. Thank the courts for this.

But $17 for a gallon is overprice for this oil.

Check the pour points for any oil you are considering. Most of the synthetic 15w40 has a real low pour point. The points are usually low enough that, unless you live in Canada or Alaska, you can use 15w40 year round. The dino oils are a little more finicky. You need to check on each product.

In most places in the U.S., you can just go ahead and use 15w40 synthetic year round and not worry about any delays getting the oil into circulation on a cold motor. It will save you changing the oils to match the season.

Why does it not surprise me one bit that Rotella is the oil of choice for good ole Sully2?!

I think you can find it for $2 a gallon at Big Lots. It might be used a bit, but so what, Rotella is so great it shouldn't matter any, right? Heck, the TBN will still be above 3.

Group 4...group 3...group 1 or even group 99...doesnt mean a DA** thing to me. I want an oil that does what it needs to do for ME! I want ( in this case oil) a product that EXCEEDS the needed requirements...is READILY obtainable...and does what is required of it.

What my Kubota required was a 10W-30 oil ...DIESEL RATED...either Dino or Syn...didnt matter to me at all..and I didnt want backed into the corner of only being able to get Kubota branded oil (dino) at the price they charge!!

Ive "operated" engines of various sorts for over 38 years..using nothing buy API certified DINO oil and have NEVER had any sort of problems....and this tractor and the Kubota engine on my motorhome genset are the onlyones Ive EVER used a SYN oil in...only because I cant fine an oil thats Dino to meet my engines requirements.

I fully understand that "some" really get into the "oilology" of tractor lubes...thats cool..I have my own certain "things" that I delve deeply into...but "tractor lube" aint one of them...:)...but as others have posted many times on here that Ive even read.."Use a quailty product...use quality filters...change as per required..or even more often if you wish"...and LET IT GO... It AINT that big a deal fellas!

BTW: I told the guy at the cash register when I bought the first gallon at TSC...that "Jesse James used a gun at least"....LOL
