The definition given in the first post by Rick with Corriher Implement Co., Inc was "Live PTO is the ability to stop the movement of the tractor while keeping the PTO turning". I gave the YM1500 example to show that that wasn't a good definition. Rick probably should have said "Live PTO is the ability to start & stop the movement of the tractor while keeping the PTO turning" I don't agree with that definition either. The live pto has a seperate clutch to engage it. To engage the pto on a powershift Yanmar you use the same clutch as the transmission. The power is still being transmitted through the transmission & if you step on the clutch while the pto is engaged the momentum of a mower will still push you. It is a transmission driven pto. "Live" PTOs operate independently of the tractor drivetrain. I strongly agree that the powershift can be operated like a live pto , but it is not a live pto. The North American Equipment Dealers Association does not list any Yanmars as having live pto's. This is a matter of semantics. If the ad said "It operates like a live pto " , I don't think there would have been any problem.
Union Farm Equipments' third method is still a transmission driven pto.
