A Corvallis woman was critically injured just after noon today when she was run over by a tractor harvesting hay in a field near a shopping center.

Lt. Cord Wood, spokesman for the Corvallis Police Department, said 23-year-old Joanna Herron was found face down in 4.5 feet tall grass, with the hood of her sweatshirt up and a CD player beside her. Wood said it appeared that Herron was struck on the head by one or both of the tractor's left side tires.

We don't know what she was doing there," Wood said, "but she had one of those old school CD players and was most likely listening to music and just didn't hear the tractor."

It was a pretty big John Deere. The woman's condition is said to be improving. Luckily, she was not on the side with the mower.

A farmer/district court judge hereabouts once ran his big IH over his own head inside his garage. It busted his skull about every way it could, totally changed his appearance, but he came through it fine in the end. The garage didn't fair as well as he did.

I wold not suspect alcohol but other things are possible as the field is used by transients and homeless camps.
