A cowcatcher on a tractor...I love it...oops, wait a minute; on second thought the lawyers and the nanny state might mandate such a device.

Well I see the Epic Pruner/Prude struck again regarding my comment about whether alcohol was possibly used by the woman.

I pray that you don't have children. If you do, I pray that none pay for a lazy day listening to music while laying in a field with their life.

This field is not a park, it is adjacent to a hiway, railroad tracks and city shops/ sewage treatment plant. This is grass seed harvest/ haying season in the valley, grass fields are not a place to be sleeping.

There seems to be little followup on this story since that first word that she had improved. I would like to learn more, rather than guess or imagine what happened. I hope this young woman comes out of this okay. It must be tough for all involved. I've come close to running over newborn fawns with my mower, only seeing them and stopping at the last second. That would have ruined my summer and haunted me for long after that. So, let's just hope for the best and be as charitable with our judgments as we can.

I recall a USAF Safety Briefing from a couple decades ago.

"You want to listen to music with the head phones on, stay in your room.

Don't wear headphones while exercising outdoors, biking, or operating vehicular equipment.

Just wearing them blocks sound from your environment, playing music further degrades your ability to hear those warning sounds.

Any personnel injured while wearing headphones will be subject to a line of duty determination and possible non-judicial punishment."

She's lucky she didn't end up in our thread covering things found while mowing.

I'm afraid that I have to credit noise canceling headphones and audio books with saving my sanity (what there is of it, anyway) while I'm mowing up to ten hours per week. Before the iPod, I wore ear protectors. I know I risk not hearing things that could lead to problems, but having the Irish Rovers sing The Unicorn Song for hours in my head could make me snap and go postal.

Maybe we should outlaw deaf people too???

I'm sure most deaf people would admit that it was a very significant impairment and would LOVE to have intact hearing; just because some people are unfortunately blind doesn't mean it makes sense to drive blindfolded. Deliberately handicapping yourself is exposing yourself to danger, as this woman discovered.

I do listen to podcasts or soft music while working (or on a bike etc.) but never at levels that would prevent hearing important things. Spoken word stuff is preferable to me as it is pleasant to listen to at volumes much lower (and safer) than most music.
