Cost effective heat/AC for a garage apartment

If you are sensitive to noise, I think (but do not know) that the split system is quieter. The compressor and one of the fans are some distance away from you. Also the window unit blocks the window quite a bit. This reduces light and the view. Why have a window at all in this case. You might consider putting the window unit in the wall. I have seen this done, but I don't know the issues involved. If these are not issues for you, then the window unit is a good choice.

I have the split system in my cottage , I would highly recommend it for primary cooling with occasional heating.

I purchased a Fujitsu online a couple of years ago and installed it in my garage. Works great. All fittings were flare type, so no sweating was required. Extremely quite and effecient. No heat gain because there is no duct work. Does an excellent job of removing humidity. Multi speed fan. Don't attempt to install it yourself unless you know what your doing.
