Mowing Cotter pin fell out on Bush Hog while mowing

/ Cotter pin fell out on Bush Hog while mowing #11
My equipment came with the loop style spring clips everyone is showing. I lost three the first day using the mower. I figured that was just the cost of mowing high brush and went out and bought a big box of them at HF. Strangely, I have not lost a single one since then.

I guess the spring tension was the deciding factor, but I did not think about them being different at the time.

We buy them individually and check the tension then. We buy ours at a local hardware store and have yet to run across a weak one. We haven't had to buy any in quite some time.

One of the lower three point hitch attachments I discovered the cotter pin had fallen out as I was backing under a fruit tree. I quickly shut everything down.

I got down, and managed to get the pin back in (with out the cotter pin) and I raised the bush hog and parked the tractor.

Does this happen often? Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

Clearly, I'm not going to use it again until I buy some spare cotter pins.

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
David

Cotter pin? That's the 1st time I've heard of using those on the lower 3pt arms. Get a bunch of lynch pins at Tractor Supply. That'll solve your problem.

I use this type and have never lost any.

I lost one of those in the woods last year. I ran over a clump of small saplings and they snagged the lynch pin and pulled it out. I keep a couple of spares in the tractor's tool box but I have not lost any since last year.

Flusher,
You are right. Cotter pins are the split pins you bend in opposite directions after inserting them through. Like for a wheel bering job.

I meant those spring pins that are NOT Lynch pins, but are the other style like on my reciever hitch pin. Unfortunately I do not know the correct name. :ashamed:

Silly computer guy needs to get up to speed on the tractor lingo...

I made something out of an old shirt hanger and a pair of pliers. It looks wimpy and lame, but I suspect it will keep the pin in place until I go get lynch pins tomorrow.

Thanks guys.

I can't tell you how relieved I am that I caught it and did not break anything like I could have.

PS - I'm loving my tractor, and my grapple, and my bush-hog. AWESOME tools. the property is already looking better and I've only got like 5-6 hours seat time so far.

Be Well!
David
